Simple chiropractic advice on understanding back care and managing back pain

by Shakil Hossain BLOG

Around 80% of UK adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives and most back pain gets better with making simple changes and will improve over time.

Pain is the most common symptom in healthcare but it’s not always possible to explain the exact cause of episodes of back pain.

X-rays and scans can show injury or wear and tear to tissues, but cannot show the pain itself.

Defining acute pain and chronic pain

Acute pain is short term and warns of potential tissue damage.

Chronic pain is pain that has been persistent for a while (and is longer lasting) or that treatments are not curing the problem.

If you have chronic pain you may also experience anxiety/tension, depression, social isolation, frustration and mood swings.

Back pain affects the whole body and your mind, it has both physical and psychological effects.

Pain in the buttock region or in the leg can also happen – this is “referred” from the back. This happens because the nerves in the back also supply the muscles and joints in the lower limbs and you may feel pain in those areas too.

By looking at your daily routine both at home and work you can examine the amount of strain your spine may be under.

Chiropractors recommend keeping active

There are many physical activities that you can do with back pain and regular exercise has been proved to help the mood, strengthen muscles and improve fitness.

As well as easing pain, regular controlled exercise will help build stamina, strength and flexibility. A sedentary lifestyle is a recipe for back and neck pain.

Just remember to warm up and down before and after exercise.

Good activities to try include swimming, aqua aerobics, walking, yoga and Pilates

Chiropractic top tips for a healthier back

Posture

Having good posture helps improve back health and prevent problems. Keep a straight back and avoid hunching your shoulders.

Whenever possible wear low rather than high heels. Don’t cross your legs when sitting and when standing put your weight through both legs rather than on one hip.

Good bed and sleeping position

Night time is when the body tries to rest and recover.

Try to sleep on your back and if on your side avoid the recovery position as this will twist your back and strain it. Try a pillow under or in between your knees for extra support.

A good mattress is also important and although personal choice generally a firmer mattress is better for your back.

Shopping and lifting

When carrying bags even them out in both hands.

When picking things up always bend from the knees and keep the load close to you.

Modify lifting movements if they are repetitive.

Maintenance care

Regular check-ups with your chiropractor are advisable especially if you have a history or back problems. A chiropractor will be able to identify any problem and treat it before it becomes too painful.

Stress less

Stress can often cause muscle tension causing a loss of suppleness that can lead to back pain. Try to reduce stress by exercising, eating healthier foods and getting plenty of sleep etc. Massage is also helpful to relax tight muscles.

Other forma of help for back pain include injections, operations, TENS machine and pain clinics or pain management programmes.

If your back pain cannot be cured there are still plenty of options available to help manage it.
