Should You Work out in Boxer Shorts?

by Whiteshark Media White Shark Media

You may have heard some men say they don't wear underwear when they work out. They say that the use of underwear while exercising is a matter of personal preference. First of all, you definitely should be wearing underwear when you exercise, whether you're at the gym, fitness center, running, riding your bike, or doing anything else. But, what kind of underwear? Should you be wearing briefs? Or maybe boxers? What about athletic boxer briefs?

When you're working out, wearing underwear with adequate support is a must. This means going "commando" or in loose boxer shorts is out. For one thing, the revealing nature of gym shorts can't be ignored. You may find yourself quite embarrassed if you don't cover yourself up properly. Beyond this, supportive underwear serves a very practical purpose while working out. Underwear that conforms to your body allows for a fuller range of movement and prevents seams from riding up uncomfortably.

When it comes to support alone, briefs are one of the better options. That’s not to say that this style of underwear is the only good one. Depending upon your workout routine and personal style preference, athletic works boxer briefs may be best for you.

It's also worth noting that there is a health aspect to it as well. Most people, both men and women, sweat to some degree while working out. Bacteria and yeast thrive in warm environments, like in between your legs. Wearing form-fitting underwear offers another layer to catch all of the sweat or wetness associated with your workout routine. You may experience discomfort from excessive perspiration while exercising if you have decided to forego underwear in order to avoid the bunching and movement of boxer shorts. This can lead to jock itch, a red, itchy rash that may be shaped like a ring. Jock itch is a fungal infection found in warm and moist areas of the body. The rash often affects the groin and inner thighs. Adding a little baby powder in your workout bottoms may help, but wearing better underwear is much more helpful.

When it comes to wearing underwear while exercising, there seem to be several different opinions out there. For some people, wearing underwear is truly bothersome, as their boxers tend to shift and bunch up during exercise. Others find the idea of not wearing underwear while exercising absolutely unimaginable. How gross! You may not like the thought of wearing briefs. People in the locker room will see you wearing "tighty whities." How embarrassing! For these people, athletic boxer briefs is the right option.

It's also worth noting that the material matters too. Cotton and bamboo seem to be the most exercise-friendly material to wear. Both of these materials are completely breathable and lightweight. You never want to wear something like silk or satin, as they often rub and cause irritation. Plus, neither one is a breathable material.

When you do a bit of research and shop for the best underwear, you will find that you can get through your workout routine with ease by wearing boxer briefs. They're the best of both worlds!
