Although it is the best stress buster available, for many different reasons the general population is not able to take advantage of it. Why is it important to research the type of mattress you should buy?

You would not go and buy a new car without doing appropriate research would you? No, you would not, because you need to ensure that besides getting good value for your money, you are getting something that will be a perfect fit for your individual needs. Buying a mattress is similar to buying a car. You don’t just wake up one morning and instantly buy the first one you see in the store. You need to research a number of factors that will help you get a mattress that is ideal for you. Here we learn a little about the different types of mattresses available in the market today and then we move on to finding the right one for you.

What are the standard sizes of mattresses?

There are six standard sizes for mattresses. These are outlined below:

  • Twin–39 x 75 inches (or 99 x 190 cm)
  • X-Long Twin–39 x 80 inches (99 x 203 cm)
  • Full–54 x 75 inches (137 x 190 cm)
  • Queen–60 x 80 inches (or 153 x 203 cm)
  • King–76 x 80 inches (or 198 x 203 cm)
  • California King–72 x 84 inches (or 182 x 213 cm)

The size of bed you own will determine the size of your mattress. If you are unsure about the size you can measure the bed with a measuring tape to determine which size would be ideally suited. In case it is a custom made bed, then the mattress would also have to be custom made to the ideal size.

What are the different types of mattress available in the market?

A mattress is more than a large pad of cotton that you just throw on top of a bed and cover with a bed sheet. In fact the old cotton swab mattresses of the days gone by are nearly obsolete in the face of all the technology that is available in sleep ergonomics.  Based on the material that a mattress is constructed from there are six distinct different types of mattresses available in the market today. These are innerspring, futon, water, latex, memory foam mattress and air mattresses.

Each of these different types of mattresses serves a specific purpose.  They all have varying degrees of “Supportiveness”. Supportiveness refers to the ability of a mattress to keep the person’s body in a flat and level position.  Some mattresses that lack supportiveness are likely to sag and allow some body parts to be lower and higher than the rest of the body. If you suffer from chronic back ache an air mattress is likely to be best suited for your needs as opposed to innerspring mattresses which do not support the different body parts at the same level plane.

What is the composition of an innerspring mattress?

This is the most enduring type of mattress and is generally the one that is purchased by the majority of the population. An innerspring mattress is made up of three parts namely the spring core, the foundation and the upholstery. The spring core is made up of steel coiled springs of different types packed together. The different types of coils include Bonnel coils, Marshall coils, offset coils and continuous coils. The Bonnel coils are the oldest known and were used in the seats of horse carriages in the 19th century.  Marshall coils are thin gauged and barrel shaped coils which are knotless and encased within fabric pockets. Offset coils have an hourglass shape where in the top and bottom of the spring have been flattened. Continuous coils, as the name suggests, are rows of coils that are formed using a single wire. Different mattresses will use a combination of these or one of them individually.

The foundation can be made of wood, a combination of wood and steel, or simply a box spring. Its purpose is to offer support and make the mattress more bouncy. The upholstery is called the comfort layer and includes the cushioning material. It also consists of three layers called the insulator, the middle upholstery and the quit. The insulator is placed on the mattress core and the middle upholstery is placed on it. The insulator is made of mesh or fiber. The middle upholstery lies between the insulator and the quilt.  It can be made up of foam, polyester fiber, wool, cotton or non woven fiber pads. The quilt is the final top layer of the mattress and is usually made up of light foam or fabric giving a soft texture to the mattress.

Mattress without springs

While the coiled spring mattresses have been the mainstay of mattresses available in the market over the last century, the emergence of new technology has made it possible to design mattresses without springs. The primary choice of material for such mattresses has been foam. Foam blended with latex from rubber trees have made it possible to manufacture mattresses that actually remember your body shape and mold to it to give you a comfortable resting position. The visco elastic mattresses or memory foam mattress as they are commonly called are the very latest word in comfort and cushioning.

When you go shopping for a new mattress make comfort your primary goal. Then look at the best material for your needs. Once you pick the type of mattress identify the size you must buy. After deciding on your final choice make sure that you try it out by sleeping on it for about fifteen to twenty minutes to ensure that you are comfortable with what you intend to buy. That’s how you shop for the right mattress.
