As a small start-up company, it can be difficult to know how to appeal to customers. Often, there are a lot of larger and more experienced companies in the industry which potential customers would opt to choose. This puts you at a major disadvantage, but there are some things you can do to help give your company the nationwide appeal which would attract more customers:

1. Get a well functioning website. Having a website is the first step to competing with the big players in your field. They probably all have websites too, so make sure that you spend a lot of time on yours. Make sure that you conduct search engine optimisation on your website, or find somebody that can do this for you. This will allow your website to show up in search engine results the same as the other websites do, which would encourage more people to click on it and use your services. With a website, you can create the image that you would like to portray. Nobody needs to know that you operate out of a small office at your home address; your website can present a much more corporate and professional image.

2. Get a non-geographic telephone number. Another thing that you might consider is changing your telephone number from the local telephone number to a more prestigious non-geographic one. When a potential customer sees this telephone number on your website, they will have no idea where you are located and assume that you are a much larger company than you actually are.

3. Get several geographic telephone numbers. Another trick is to find several geographic telephone numbers which showcase your presence across the UK. For example, you might want to choose a London telephone number, Manchester telephone number, a Glasgow telephone number and a Belfast telephone number. This makes customers in these nearby areas more confident to choose your services, as they believe that you are located very close to them. They need never know that you are actually just a small company based in a small town far away from them.

4. Get professional live call answering, another trick of the trade is to ensure that all of the telephone calls coming into your telephone line are answered by professional call handlers or receptionists. If you get a high volume of calls to your business every day, a business answering service is particularly beneficial as it means that less people will be waiting in a queue and are more likely to get the response that they called for. If you choose to answer the calls yourself, you may sometimes not be available, be out of the office or have a poor mobile telephone reception. This can appear unprofessional and the customer might choose to shop elsewhere.
