Sensory Deprivation Tank Sessions - Back to the Womb
by Alan Jake I like to workA float pod
or sensory deprivation tank is often
referred to as the ‘womb room’ and it is referred as such for good reason. The
float pods actually mimic the environment of our mother’s womb. Now this may
start you wondering as to what is so good about it then, well the truth is that
when we were in our mother’s wombs, it was so peaceful that the environment
actually allowed everything within us to develop within the space of nine
months including our brains.
Hence
when individuals are put into a womb room or engage in sensory deprivation tank
therapy for about 45 minutes to two hours, they take a trip back to the womb
when everything was so peaceful that the brain had pretty much nothing else to
do, but concentrate on itself and its support system which is our bodies.
The
typical sensory deprivation tank is about seven or so feet in length, it is dark,
soundproofed and filled to the brim with Epsom salt solution (Magnesium
sulphate) heated to about our own body temperature, now what this does is
firstly, the magnesium sulphate solution does not allow us to sink or drown and
keeps us buoyant and because the solution is heated to body-temperature we will
not be able to tell the difference between the parts of our body that is below
the water line to the parts of our body that is above the water line.
This
practically reduces the impact of gravity for the entire duration that we are
in the float pod. Now couple that fact with the other facts such as being
unable to hear noise smell anything or see anything, the brain is left without
anything in particular to do. Now the brain is not an organ that just likes to
laze about doing nothing, and since during the sensory deprivation tank float it
has huge amounts of brain processing power at its disposal, what happens is
that the brain works on our biological condition.
Hence, during the sensory deprivation tank session when the brain is left free
from having to deal with our sensory inputs it works on the recalibration of our
entire biological system that ranges from our internal chemical balances,
circulation, stabilisation of hormonal production to optimal levels and even
cell repair in the instances that the ‘floater has a physical injuring that is
healing.
It is because of this reason that medical
practitioners everywhere recommend the use of floatation pods as an auxiliary
treatment for a wide variety of ailments which include manic depression,
anxiety, issues with habits, chronic pain, PMS and pregnancy discomforts,
spinal issues, gout, joint or muscle pains and so much more.
The sensory deprivation concept could be deemed as
an ‘accidental find’ made by Dr John C Lily as his reason to invent the sensory deprivation tank was to experiment with
drugs, not realising that what he had created was actually a ‘brain vacation’
contraption that is currently baffling the entire medical community due to its
high success rates in clinical trials related to numerous ailments.
