Selecting the best fabric for your sewing projects
If you have a passion for sewing and would
like to start your sewing project without any delay, it is very important that
you pick the right fabric for the project as the success may depend a lot on
the type of fabric you choose for the project. So, let’s have a look at how you
can pick one.
Wovens - This is created on a loom, woven
fabric is often very less stretchable. It is one of the most commonly picked
fabrics by professionals and beginners as this includes cotton or corduroy.
Non-Wovens - You would have heard this type
of fabric, which is made using a bond of long fibers. Non-woven fabric is often
weak and lacks strength for certain sewing
projects. For example, you should not use it when making a bag.
Knits - A knitted fabric is one that is
made by interlocking stitches in vertical rows. This is thick and is made to
drape well, making it stretchy and difficult to sew. It is not suggested to
pick for your sewing projects,
especially when you are a beginner.
Microfiber - This is also a commonly used
fabric as this is made by tightly binding together synthetic fabrics. Polyester
is a good example of this.
Cotton, linen and wool - For everyone,
including beginners, using these three fabrics can be a very easy choice as
they are very easy to work with. Since they all shrink once washed and dried,
so make sure to prepare the project accordingly.
