Apart from the saree, Indian women also share a deep connection with jewellery. However much modern we become, there are certain distinct pieces that still manage to make us look beautiful even in all their simplicity.

1. Maangtika:
One of the original pieces of the solahshringaar (sixteen ornaments) in an Indian bride’s ensemble, the maangtika is a type of hair ornament. It is mostly designed like a teardrop (and sometimes a circle) that sits delicately on the girl’s forehead. It may not be extravagant at all but it still brings out the inner beauty of the woman. Maangtikas may have evolved during the times but the fact that it is still one of the most sensuous pieces jewellery on a girl hasn’t.

2. Hand Bracelets:
Hand bracelets (or haathphool as Indians call it) have a rich history throughout the decades. Originating in Persia but popularized by the Mughal courtesans in India, the haathphool has now become a global phenomenon. Earlier it was limited to weddings and special family functions but now it has found its way through the party circles all over the world. Hand bracelets, decorative in nature enhances the appeal of any outfit. Ladies with Navratri coming up, be sure to pair one of these with your lehenga choli.

3. Anklets:
This particular ornament originated in Egypt but travelled all around the world to become a most on-demand jewellery item for women. Anklets are a symbol of the innocence and beauty of the woman. The sounds emitted by the small tinkling charms in the anklets are one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. Nowadays anklets have shed their simple charm and donned the rebellious soul of women by the quirky designs they have evolved into.

4. Armlet:
Indians know this particular piece of jewellery as bajuband. The armlet is again one of the sixteen pieces of jewellery originally part of an Indian bride’s ornaments. Armlets were incidentally first worn by the Indian men, Bharatanatyam dancers in the Dravidian region. However slowly it became known as an accessory for both men and women. The bajuband show the strength and passion when it comes to being worn by the Indian women. You can be pretty sure it will attract eyes from all over the place, wherever you go.

5. Kamarbandh or Waistband:

Kamarbandh or the waistband has been a part of our heritage as long as we can remember. Ancient cave sculptures all over India show the queens and goddesses of old wearing intricately designed waistbands. The kamarbandh usually is paired up with a saree to increase the appeal of the waist. The waistband rests on the delicate waist and speaks about your inner sensuality more than an accessory. You can definitely count on being the belle of the ball when you don the kamarbandh with your saree or lehenga choli.

6. Nosering:

While we are covering all the major parts of our body, why should the nose be left behind? Nose rings are the ultimate accessory that you will see women all over India wearing. I know of these because I have grown up watching my mom wear one for my entire life. Nose rings can be simple, consisting of only one stud or it can be decorated with the chain going around to be clipped in your hair. Simple or no, noserings are definitely an attractive piece of accessory on a woman.

7. Earrings:
Possibly the most popular accessory for the woman of today, earrings have been a part of our lives from since we could imagine. Nowadays earrings are of different designs and patterns. You can find earrings serving as fashion jewellery as well as evolving into jhumkas that have become an irreplaceable accessory with ethnic outfits. Heavy or lightweight, earrings always make our hidden beautiful soul shine through.

8. Necklace:
Necklaces go head to head with earrings when it comes to popularity within the women of today. Necklaces bring an outfit together, even as a stand-alone item of jewellery. Nowadays necklaces have layers to them like two or three chains attached in one. Many other designs have also been incorporated in this category so you could choose for yourself and watch it polish up your outfit like nothing else.
