Security Council resolution and Israel's stubbornness
The UN Security Council has passed a resolution on the Israel-Hamas war calling for immediate and long-term humanitarian pauses and corridors throughout the Gaza Strip. The resolution also called for Hamas to release the hostages unconditionally.
The resolution was passed by 12 votes to zero. Out of the total 15 members, USA, UK and Russia were absent during the voting. It is noteworthy that the resolution made no mention of the complete ceasefire and the attack by Hamas as well as Israel's air and ground attacks on Gaza. Russia had tabled an amendment to the resolution before the vote calling for lasting humanitarian breaks that would eventually lead to a ceasefire, but the amendment was rejected by a five-to-one vote. Nine members did not participate in the voting.
The adopted resolution, presented by Malta, urged all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law to protect civilians, especially children.
