Second Skin Will Help You Look Younger in the Future and Other Science Tech
Health is a big industry, and everyday we report the latest
in science & technology updates in the healthcare industry. Enjoy today’s
digest.
Second Skin Will Help
You Look Younger in the Future
A significant amount of research is being done to counter
aging in humans. However, a barrier exists where a person cannot look younger
because of aging factors like wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes. Amidst
the booming $60 billion cosmetic industry, researchers at Harvard and MIT have
come up with a transparent, silicone-based polymer ‘second skin’ that can
protect from harmful sun rays and removes wrinkles.
“A wearable material layer that restores the normal skin
mechanics and appearance is unprecedented and provides a platform to solve
other cutaneous problems,” Researchers wrote.
The product is breathable, flexible, invisible and
water-proof, and is being manufactured by a company founded by the researchers
called Olivo Laboratories.
“We created a new material that is safe. We’ve put it on
human beings. It’s adherent and mechanically strong. It’s easy to apply,” said
Robert Langer, Biological Engineering Professor at MIT and Co-founder of Olivo
Labs, “It’s kind of like an invisible Spanx that you could put on skin.”
Viv is the Digital Voice
Assistant of the Future
After selling Siri (Speech Interpretation and Recognition
Interface) to Apple for an amount rumored to be in excess of $200 million,
founders Dag Kittlaus and Adam Cheyer have created a digital assistant that is
much smarter and even more complex than Siri. Revealing Viv at Disrupt NYC,
they have been developing the technology in secret for over 4 years.
"Viv is designed to be devices agnostic - think one
platform, open to all services, for all devices, personalized for you. Viv's
goal is to be ubiquitous so it will understand your preferences and history as
you engage with it on your mobile device, or in your car, or with your smart
device at home. Our sense is there will be a move away from having hundreds of
different apps that act independently. These services will be integrated into
everyday life. Viv will be the platform to enable it,” said Adam Koopersmith, Viv
Investor.
Quantum Computers to Render
Cryptography Obsolete in 20 Years
In a report titled “Report on Post-Quantum Cryptography”, the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) predicts that quantum
computers will make current cryptography system obsolete in two decades.
“In recent years, there has been a substantial amount of research
on quantum computers - machines that exploit quantum mechanical phenomena to
solve mathematical problems that are difficult or intractable for conventional
computers. If large-scale quantum computers are ever built, they will be able
to break many of the public-key cryptosystems currently in use,” the report
states.
