Seasonal Home Improvement: Spring Maintenance Checklist

by Emma L. Business consultant

With warm days finally here, many homeowners are eager to begin with spring cleaning. Spring is the perfect time for changes as it gives us the opportunity to hit the reset and start fresh. However, with so many things to be tackled, many of us don’t know where to start and how to prioritize their tasks. To help you out, we’ve curated a list of seasonal home improvement projects that will give your home a fresh, new look. Let’s take a look at some of the essentials that should appear on every homeowner’s spring maintenance checklist.

Do a proper clear-out

After a long winter, it’s time to tackle everything we couldn’t because of the cold weather. Now is the right time to declutter and throw away everything you don’t use. This also can be a good reason to use a self-storage unit and store everything you don`t want to donate, sell, or throw away – do anything it takes to keep the clutter at bay. Give your bathroom a proper scrub and get rid of that grout in the shower. Shampoo your carpets to give them a fresh new look, and don’t forget the curtains, too. Use homemade cleaners instead of the toxic ones, as they won’t hurt the environment, and they’re also a great pocket-friendly alternative. As for your outdoor space, clean the gutters and downspouts from leaves, sticks, and debris. That way, you’re making sure the water flow won’t get blocked, and you’ll also help keep rodents and pests away.

Inspect outdoor woodwork and concrete surfaces

After a proper clear-out, it’s time to tackle the fixing and replacing. Start with the roof – inspect roofing thoroughly to make sure there aren’t any loose or missing shingles. After that, move on to the wooden deck and fence – check if there are any damaged or missing boards and replace them if necessary. Inspect the condition of the woodwork to decide whether there is a need for re-sealing or staining – doing so will make your outdoor space look as good as new. Next on the maintenance checklist are concrete surfaces. Similar to woodwork, driveways and pathways suffer a lot of damage throughout the year. Due to the harsh weather conditions they are exposed to, there is a possibility that you’ll notice some cracks in the concrete. In order to avoid any further damage, consider re-sealing your outdoor concrete surfaces – that way you can rest assured they’re protected, thus avoiding the so called "alligator cracking" in your driveway and pathways.

Check your plumbing

One of the major concerns that should be high on the list of priorities this spring is definitely plumbing. Many homeowners love DIY projects because they can save a pretty penny doing things on their own. However,  there are certain plumbing jobs you just shouldn’t do by yourself. For example, clogged shower heads can easily be a DIY task, but may require professional work if it’s the concealed plumbing that is causing the issue. On the other hand, serious plumbing jobs such as pipe replacement, clogged drains, and leakages are all things that are best left to the professionals. That is why many Australian homeowners don’t try to tackle plumbing projects but rather opt for a reliable plumber in Canberra that way, they get quality service from an experienced professional, and they can rest assured that everything is done properly.

Take care of the lawn

A well-manicured lawn can really boost your home’s curb appeal. In order for that to happen, you’ll need to put in some work. First things first, get your lawnmower blades sharpened – doing so will improve its efficiency and result in a cleanly-cut grass. It’s best to take your lawnmower to the local shop and have its blades sharpened or you can do it yourself. Another way to maintain the perfect lawn is to apply pre-emergent herbicide. Doing so will prevent the weeds from sprouting in your yard, resulting in a gorgeous, flawless lawn.

Refresh your outdoor furniture

With sunny days finally here, we’re all looking forward to spending our time out in the fresh air. That is why you need to take care of your outdoor furniture to ensure it looks its best. Clean your benches, chairs, and tables, and consider repainting them in some brighter colors to make your porch more welcoming. Depending on the material of your outdoor furniture, you’ll need to get the appropriate cleaning products to wash off the dirt and mildew. For example, if you’re worried about scratching or dulling the surface of your resin furniture, skip commercial cleaners and use baking soda instead. Simply wet the sponge, dip it in soda, and you’re good to go.

There you have it – top five essentials for spring cleaning. Use these tips as a spring maintenance checklist to ensure your home is in tip-top shape!
