Sea Turtle Preservation: Reduce Plastic Pollution & Maintain Marine Biodiversity

by PRC Agency PR

Sea turtles are cute little creatures! Sadly, however, their existence is under threat thanks to us and our negligent behavior. For far too long we have been using the oceans as our garbage pails, and now, as Ever Wonder Adventure points out, sea turtles and other marine species are paying the price!

In its new report, the environmental advocacy platform calls for a significant reduction in marine plastic pollution in order to preserve the existence of sea turtles. The resource also explains why ecosystems need sea turtles and it puts forward some negative scenarios that could unfold if they were to go extinct.

Numbers Don't Lie

Recent estimates show that there are only about 6.5 million sea turtles left in the wild. While there are many reasons for their declining population, one of the leading causes is plastic pollution, which kills over a million marine animals each year. Considering there is anywhere from 75 to 200 million tons of plastic currently in the oceans, and a further 33 billion pounds being added every year, Ever Wonder Adventure decided that something had to be done.

“Sea turtles are under severe threat due to the alarming levels of plastic waste we are dumping into our oceans,” explained a spokesperson for Ever Wonder Adventure. “With our report, we’re hoping to shed some light on this dire situation and encourage people around the world to adopt sustainable practices and take part in conservation efforts.”

The Keystone Species

Ever Wonder Adventure refers to sea turtles as a “keystone species,” because of the role they play in maintaining the overall health and stability of both marine and terrestrial environments. They help keep seagrass and jellyfish levels regulated, they redistribute sand through their egg-laying process, and they transport vital nutrients across vast distances when they migrate.

Should we allow sea turtles to go extinct, the consequences could be catastrophic. Firstly, the jellyfish population would explode, resulting in the decimation of bio-diverse seagrass meadows and the collapse of fisheries. The important nutrient cycling that sea turtles do when they migrate would also cease happening, hindering the growth of phytoplankton, which are one of the building block organisms on the food chain.

Hope Is Not Lost!

Unfortunately - in addition to plastic pollution - sea turtles are also under constant threat from predators and poachers. However, if left unharmed, they can live anywhere from 50 to 100 years, and therefore, Ever Wonder Adventure believes they must be protected and allowed to propagate.

“As we witness the devastating effects of plastic waste on sea turtles, it becomes apparent that we have to take action,” said the spokesperson. “By adopting sustainable practices, reducing plastic pollution, and promoting conservation efforts, we can ensure the continued existence of these remarkable creatures and we can safeguard the health and resilience of marine ecosystems for generations to come.”
