Scleral Contact Lenses Have the Capability of Producing Clear Vision

combination of two, while others may choose either of two and stick to it.  Due to the misconception about wearing contact lenses, people just avoid wearing contact lenses but the use of scleral contact lenses is growing exponentially for a long time. With proper care and hygiene, you can easily avoid risks of wearing contact lenses. The material, size, and improved technology for fitting have helped on giving contacts a go. There are reasons worth considering why you should wear scleral contact lenses:

Comfortable to wear

Scleral contact lenses are large in size with 14 to over 20 mm in diameter; they not only cover the cornea but also cover the large part of the sclera so they are more comfortable to fit since the curvature of the contacts plays a lesser role in the way it fits.

scleral contact lenses are the rigid gas permeable (RPG) lenses and rest on the conjunctiva and sclera since conjunctiva is much less sensitive than the cornea so scleral contact lenses give the feeling of comfort and relaxation. On the other hand, smaller rigid gas permeable lenses average about 9.0 mm in diameter, in your eyes, you may feel them because they move around on the eyes and not comfortable to wear.

Clear Vision

Due to their large size, scleral contact lenses do not sit directly on the cornea itself and the tear fluid reservoir is created beneath the lens that fluid reservoir functions to protect the cornea and act as a cushion, as a result, they have the capability of producing cleaner vision.

Easy to center on an Irregular Cornea

The cornea becomes highly irregular and steep due to keratoconus or pellucid marginal degeneration in the eyes. In that case, due to large size scleral contact lenses overlap the cornea and remains in the center, on the other hand, regular contact lenses are difficult to remain in the center and do not cover the irregular cornea.

After all scleral contact lenses are the medical device so despite the above benefits, sometimes you may feel uncomfortable to wear them but proper fitting and handling procedure, will lead to success with scleral contact lenses:

  • Before handling your scleral contact lenses wash and rinse your hands thoroughly and dry them with a soft lint-free towel
  • Once you remove your scleral contact lenses place them in a lens case, which is filled with disinfectant solution
  • Immediately remove your scleral contact lenses, if you experience any of the symptoms like redness, consistent pain, tearing, and change in vision among others
  • Wear the protective goggles, if you are at the place or environment where dust, sand or any foreign particle may enter into your eyes.
  • In case you are still not comfortable to wear scleral contact lenses, immediately take them out and consult to an eye doctor. Stop wearing until your eyes are completely fit to wear them again.
