Science for the Summer

by Kevin Smith Author

Summers in America has a bit of a lazy reputation. Children have 'suffered' through school during one half of the year and are 'rewarded' with a great span of time off, to relax and just be kids. Summer camps, in many ways, reflect this, giving kids some structure but ultimately just being a place for them to socialize and have fun. But learning can continue while school is out, and science summer camps are just the thing to keep your child a student while still letting them have fun.

An Educational Outlet

One of the main problems students in America suffer from is from summer learning loss, where they forget what they were taught in the prior school year. This stems from not learning anything new over their summer breaks, causing them to lose some of their edges. A science summer camp helps students to stay sharp in the summertime while still having that fun summer break experience. Education and entertainment happen all at once, as kids perform activities that relate to biology, chemistry, geology, etc.

Sending your child to science summer camps gives them a real edge in their educations. Not only are they more prepared for the upcoming school year with their minds still attuned to learning, but it also allows them great opportunities for personal growth. If your child is interested in the ocean, for example, a marine science-themed camp might be a perfect way to help grow a lifelong passion. This can be an especially important experience for a student looking to get into a more competitive high school or university.

Same Fun Experiences

A science summer camp is not a school. Like any other camp, they can be just for a day, or as long as a few weeks away from home. Often times, they are spent outside, with children learning about the world around them while still getting to stretch their legs. A walk through the woods becomes about identifying plants and animals instead of ghost stories, and a night under the stars can be filled with constellations alongside the marshmallows. The educators in charge of any science summer camp want their campers to have fun while they learn, and this reflects in the outline of any decent program. And of course, like any summer camp, a science summer camp is still about making friends and having new experiences.

There are many benefits in science summer camps that cannot be had in a normal camp experience. If you child often suffers at the start of a school year, or if they have a passion that you want to help grow, consider letting them go to a related science camp this year instead.
