Sbenati Dentistry Reviews a Study on Teeth Straightening Pain, Invisalign or Braces

by DAVIS BROWN PRC Agency

Sbenati Dentistry reviews a case study today, released in 2017, on pain and discomfort with traditional braces vs. Invisalign. This case study demonstrates that to analyze the difference in discomfort levels associated with Invisalign and traditional brackets through a randomized, prospective trial. The study was performed by David W. White; Katie C. Julien; Helder Jacob; Phillip M. Campbell; Peter H. Buschang.

The case study also goes over data to see which group took more analgesics (pain medications) to relieve the pain of either orthodontic treatment.

In order to perform the study, patients of each of the treatments recorded daily pain diaries outlining their discomforts. Three diaries for each patient were created: the first at the initial appointment, the second after one month, and the third after two months. These are the highest periods of discomfort as initial movements of the teeth through orthodontic treatment tends to hurt the most. The levels of discomfort were recorded during these activities: rest, chewing, biting, analgesic consumption and potential sleep issues.

Initially both treatments showed similar levels of discomfort, which is to be expected. As mentioned above, initial movements of the teeth can be painful until the patient is used to the pressure. The study did not display a meaningful difference in this pain between each of the sexes (male or female). Furthermore, patients using the traditional brackets reported more discomfort during the first week of treatment, particularly when chewing as opposed to at rest. This can be attributed to the simple fact that Invisalign clear aligners are removed for the consumption of food.

Moving forward, traditional braces patients showed a much higher level of discomfort at the first and second month increments. Discomfort at these appointments was lower than the initial discomfort, but still noticeable higher than that of Invisalign patients. Finally, a higher number of patients within the traditional group reported taking pain medication, and a much lower number of Invisalign patients reported this. This is a clear indicator that the traditional orthodontic method causes more discomfort and pain.

Sbenati Dentistry owner Dr. Halim Sbenati says there are many people looking for insights and answers about pain and discomfort with traditional braces vs. Invisalign. This case study reveals in a practical way what's possible with the right information and guidance.
