Sampa Brazilian jiuJitsu
In Glendora and Walnut, Sampa Brazilian jiuJitsu Academy teaches our students the basic skills and principles of Brazilian jiuJitsu as well as other related martial arts. We lead our students through all ranks of their belts and stripes and guide them on their journey into being successful jiu-jitsu students and successful leaders and citizens in their communities. Once you are apart of Sampa, you become a part of the larger Brazilian jiuJitsu community. Part of that means participating in Brazilian jiuJitsu tournaments. Sampa hosted a No Gi tournament this summer and many students joined.

What is a No Gi Tournament?

In Brazilian jiuJitsu, there are two main types of tournaments – Gi tournaments, and No Gi tournaments. There are some differences between the two types of tournaments:

1. Dress
2. Grips
3. Strategy

While both the Gi tournament and the No Gi tournament are based in the skills learned from Brazilian jiuJitsu, each relies upon skills in other martial arts studies to help them succeed and thrive. In this article, we will discuss what makes the No Gi tournament unique amongst Brazilian jiuJitsu.

Dress

In No Gi tournaments, competitors must wear Brazilian jiuJitsu shorts and rash guard in comparison to Gi tournaments, which wear a traditional Brazilian jiuJitsu uniform. The difference in clothing is the most obvious and superficial way to determine whether it is a Gi tournament or a No Gi tournament. Traditional uniforms versus shorts and rash guards will change the way that participants strategize and complete the tournament.

Grips

Because of the difference in dress, participants will use different grips in order to take down their opponents. With Gi tournaments,  participants can use the clothing itself to help take down their opponents, while with No Gi tournaments, particpants use more moves from wrestling in order to help overpower their opponent.

Strategy
As mentioned, the strategy will differ greatly between Gi tournaments and No Gi tournaments.
Gi tournaments will focus on grappling with clothing, using moves like collar chokes often. On the other hand, No Gi tournaments will use grappling that is focused on using the body to attack, rather than clothing. It heavily relies upon wresting moves in its strategy.
