Safety Steps to Safer Scaffolding

by Noonan Waste Noon Waste

Almost all construction workers perform some part of their work on scaffolding. This means that scaffolding is one of the most used equipment in any construction site. Working on a scaffold is very dangerous and that is why it is important to take all safety measures when using one.

There are very many different kinds of scaffolding, however, the most common are the frame scaffolds and in this article, we will focus on safety when using frame scaffolds.

  • Training

The scaffold should be erected, dismantled, moved, and maintained with well-trained technicians.  Every worker in contact with this equipment should be sufficiently trained. The training should be in accordance with the safety regulations and should be conducted with an authorized trainer.

  • Follow Instructions

Most scaffold related incidents and accidents can be avoided if the safety instructions given are followed to the letter. Scaffolds should be set on a firm and flat surface, and workers should not interchange components from unlike manufacturers, as this can affect the structures’ integrity.

Every Workers using the scaffolding should ensure that they pay attention to the weight limitations and other safety instructions. Doing this will greatly reduce the number of scaffold related injuries ad mishaps.

  • Study the Hazards

One of the biggest hazards associated with scaffolding and containment is falls. This is mainly why guardrails and other fall-protection equipment are used. Pay close attention to power lines, overhead lines and other equipment that are a hazard for head injuries.

The platform should also be kept free from spills and the tools in use e kept in their right places to avoid slips and falls. Extreme weather conditions can also create hazards like icy or wet surfaces which workers should be aware of before using the equipment during such conditions.

  • Inspect the Equipment

Scaffolding should be inspected at least every day before it is used. During an inspection, one should also consider the different activities that will be performed on that particular day. The equipment must be verified and tagged before use. Scaffolding should not be used if damaged in any way

Conclusion

Scaffolds are quite complex and should be handled as such. This is why it is important that they are handled with trained individuals and should also be properly maintained, repaired, and everybody handling it should also be supervised. Paying that extra attention when handling and using scaffolding is an investment that is sure to have a major payoff.
