The aftermath of failing to prepare for your house move!

Moving day can take a toll on the best of us, but with a bit of preparation and common sense, most of these injuries can be avoided! To keep your belongings (and body parts) out of harm’s way, you need a strategic plan. If your plan is to ‘wing it’,  you can bet your bottom dollar that a series of unfortunate events will occur, and I don’t mean the literary kind!

In their detailed guide, Movers.com shares advice on how to mitigate dangers when packing for your house move. The experts offer a list of precautions you can take to avoid accidents or injuries when moving your household items and furniture.

It's time to devise that moving strategy.

The guide stresses the importance of preparation to avoid the risk of accidents or injury. You are advised to prepare a ‘moving first-aid kit’, including items such as bandages, gauze pads, and antibacterial cream, to quickly treat any minor injuries that may occur when packing or moving household items. Moving strategy step one: buy plasters.

As explained in the guide, most moving-related injuries occur from lifting too much weight or using an improper lifting technique. Therefore, you should enlist the help of others when lifting heavy items to ensure that the weight is evenly distributed. (No need for any ego lifting here - you can save that for the gym). In addition, it is important to limit the amount of items per packing box to no more than 50 pounds in weight, says the guide. “While it may not be possible for you to weigh every single box, simply pick up the box to see if you can lift it without feeling any strain. If you can stand steadily on your feet while holding it and walk without a problem, then the box is probably not too heavy.” Moving strategy step two: buy more packing boxes.

The guide details the proper lifting technique for avoiding back injuries when moving. Rather than using your back, you should squat before lifting, using the power from your legs to lift heavy weights. Never bend over at the waist, explains the guide, as this can put too much pressure on your back muscles, resulting in injury. The experts at Movers.com also advise strapping heavy items to carrier trucks and dollies to limit the distance that heavy items need to be carried by hand. Moving strategy step three: practice my lifting technique.

Alongside careful lifting, the guide discusses the importance of preparing your environment for a move. Paths, roads, and driveways should be checked carefully for any potential hazards, such as uneven ground, snow, or low-hanging branches.

“Organisation is key,” says Movers.com. “Keep all pathways clear of obstacles and debris at all times. Keep heavy and light boxes separate from each other and assign jobs and roles to everyone involved, to streamline the moving process and prevent chaos.”
