Rustic décor: a tendency in interior design

The rustic decoration is a style which can be easily used for a countryside setting or a big city mansion, as long as you are a fan of nature and you like traditional items. To begin with, the rustic style has a main characteristic the heavy use of natural wood, be it olive wood (for smaller ornaments) or solid oak wood (for the floors or ceilings). If you want to offer your home some proximity to natural elements, you should know that this type of styling involves various items, and is suitable to almost any space, regardless its size or your budget. Olive wood products can be found on the market at affordable prices, and even if you do not have the most traditional arrangements, you can bring some traditional air to the space with small wooden figurines. In addition to the limited budget that you can use to create this style, if you opt for this style you have a wide variety of products to choose from, and you will stick to the latest trends as far as interior design is concerned. To some extent, rustic décor is similar to the country-style décor, because they somehow overlap in many aspects: they have a traditional aspect, simple yet not minimal, and use mostly natural products, such as stone and wood. If there is a difference between them, it is the fact that rustic style seems to have an “unfinished” finish, because most of the furniture items seem to have barely suffered any modification.

The theme is very important in rustic décor, and most of the times the main theme is wildlife. Wall art includes images of animals, and the classic small decorations are replaced with olive wood items, resembling animals or animal parts: horns, profiles or fangs. Another relevant theme is, of course, nature, which is why large images depicting natural elements, wild forests or eccentric plants are relevant details in a rustic house. For a genuine aspect, the basic materials used are the natural ones, or at least the finishes should look like a rough outcome: olive wood products can be combined with grain patterns, the chairs can still have the bark of the trees they have been made of and floors are covered with animal furs or fathers. In case you like this style but you are also an animal lover, there are plenty of materials substituting of all these elements, which look extremely well and seem genuine, and you can even replace stones with cement or concrete. To add a bit of cutting-edge touch to the interior, you can also use metals, but these should lack shine: wrought iron and pressed tin are the most common options.

As far as furniture is concerned, the big pieces are characteristic to rustic décor. Huge wooden wardrobes in one form, with round sections or edges, big carved armchairs or twig baskets will bring a genuine touch and a rough result. To complete the aspect of your house, the big windows are recommended, to brighten the interior and bring it closer to the nature.
