Republic Day: How to constitute the society towards development of the nation
by Akshaya Patra NGO in India - Akshaya PatraFormer
President (late) Dr A P J Abdul Kalam used to constantly stress the need to
transform India into a developed nation. He believed that for achieving this
goal, an integrated action was needed.
He believed
that India needed to have food security, economic security and national
security enroute to becoming a developed nation.
National security
Food
security is probably the first step towards national security.
For food
security, Kalam had listed out five areas, including agriculture and food
processing, reliable and quality electric power, surface transport and
infrastructure for all parts of the country, education and healthcare.
Information and communication technology and self-reliance in critical
technologies were inter-related and if they progressed in a coordinated way,
the country would ultimately enjoy food, economic and, hence, national
security.
Towards
meeting this goal, an NGO in India like The Akshaya
Patra Foundation plays a major role.
Kalam
believed that rural prosperity is imperative. For bringing rural prosperity,
the creation of three connectivities viz. physical, electronic, and knowledge
leading to economic connectivity. For knowledge that would ensure prosperity,
first of all the people need to be literate.
Literacy
For the
citizens to play a constructive role in the progress of a democracy and
Republic like ours, it's important that they have the right education and
ability to understand the working of the economy.
In addition,
literacy has proved to give better access to formal sector employment for poor
households. With more education, people from rural areas have the incentive to
migrate to urban areas for better jobs, higher wages and better prospects of
life. Because of this, more people are coming into the manufacturing industry
and leaving traditional agriculture.
According to
the Harris-Todaro Model, this increasing labor entering manufacture helps both
agriculture and manufacture laborers. The labor in agriculture decreases which
leads to an increase in their wages.
Role of citizenry
Our
69-year-old Republic has been growing in strength as a democracy. This has been
possible because of an enlightened citizenry. In being so, the role of the NGO has been a
very important one.
It's the NGO
that keeps the citizens alert about their rights. The society will then be in a
position to ensure their rights are not taken away on various pretexts,
especially when the leaders are over-enthusiastic about making the country prosperous.
A basic need like food for all should be primary.
Right to Food
The Constitution that was adopted on January 26, 1950 had envisaged a future country that has no issues when it came to basic needs of people like food. But, even after decades there are millions who are in need of help. Since the founding of Akshaya Patra 17 years ago, it has been doing its mite to ensure that children do not drop out of school for want of food.
Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meals reach over 1.6 million school-going children. These children are from the 13,839 schools across the 12 states in India. As the programme expands you can play a role by donating to charity to expand the project to feed the children.
