Representation of women in general elections
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has emphasized that the political parties who have received election symbols should ensure five percent representation of women candidates on the general seats in the general elections 2024. The spokesperson of the Election Commission said that it is mandatory for the political parties that get election symbols to ensure the representation of women candidates on the general seats under Section 206 of the Election Act 217. The spokesperson added that all political parties have been requested to submit the list of male and female candidates (who have been issued party tickets) for their general seats to the Election Commission within five days.
According to reports so far, Muslim League (N) and PPP have given tickets to a few women on the general seat, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has issued tickets to 21 women on the general seat, this number is more than other political parties. is more Women are almost half of the total population and the Election Commission has issued a directive to keep their representation at least five percent in the elections. Their ratio is very low, one of the reasons for this is our social system, in which only men are considered fit to play the political stake. To increase the representation of women in politics, former President Pervez Musharraf gave seats for them. There are 60 reserved seats for women in the National Assembly, 66 reserved seats for women in Punjab, the largest province of the country in terms of population, 26 reserved seats for women in the provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. While there are 29 in Sindh province and 11 in Balochistan province. In the Political Party Act, the party chairman has the authority to approve the final lists for certain seats and according to this law, the authority of the party chairman cannot be challenged anywhere.
Women have played an important role in Pakistani politics, it is not possible to ignore the role of women in the struggle of Pakistan. Maxim Gorky's historical novel "Mother" presented to us in the form of Johorbradran's mother Mrs. "Aman B". Along with Quaid-i-Azam's sister Fatima Ali Jinnah, Amjadi Begum, Begum Salma Tasadeq Hussain, Rana Liaquat Ali Khan and Fatima Sughra, thousands of women dedicated their lives for the struggle of Pakistan. The passion was in no way less than that of men, despite the social restrictions of that time, these women played an eternal role and devoted their lives to making the dream of Pakistan a reality. Even after the establishment of Pakistan, the role of women remained important, in addition to the evolution of society and the formation of political culture, they also served in important positions.
Bravely faced all opposition and difficulties. Who does not know Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan, she served in important key positions of Pakistan and proved that women are not inferior to men if given confidence, training and opportunity. After that, there is the political period of Nusrat Bhutto and then Benazir Bhutto, their struggle, they endured the hardships of imprisonment, faced the oppression of the situation, endured the grief of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's execution, but Ms. Benazir Bhutto was the first woman Prime Minister not only of Pakistan but of the Muslim world, she took over the political legacy of her father and then sacrificed her life to protect him. Late Begum Kulsoom Nawaz stood by Mian Nawaz Sharif in good and bad times, raised her voice against Musharraf's dictatorship and stood alone to fight him. Today, Maryam Nawaz is following in her father's footsteps. are, political stakes are getting tangled, she returned home with her father to complete the sentence. Apart from this, Maryam Aurangzeb, Sherry Rehman, Sherry Mazari, Nafisa Shah, Shazia Murri, Tehmina Daultana, Fahmida Mirza. Dozens of women like Syeda Abida Hussain are playing their full role in politics, Dr. Yasmin Rashid is in jail in this part of Umar but is sticking to his word. Apart from this, there are many names who have always stood by their party. Loyal Not only politics, women are at the forefront of Pakistan in fields, in hospitals, in educational institutions, in scientific research, in fields, in threshing floors, in factories, on markets, on roads.
At a time when women are celebrating their importance everywhere, the Election Commission's assurance that five percent representation of women in general seats is indeed a commendable step, but at the same time It is also a matter of concern for the political parties. It should be that the political parties themselves should realize that, if seen, women are playing an important role in decision-making in almost every political party. have come, sometimes staying in front and sometimes behind doing their work, so in such a case, this instruction should not come. Specific seats are still discussed, it has been seen that these seats are generally family or close relations. It is shared among the family members. Now it is hoped that the political parties will follow the instructions of the Election Commission and give at least five percent representation to women, thus the journey to reach the assembly by fighting for the general seat will increase their confidence.
Faced with problems, many difficulties stand in their way, still there is injustice to them in our society, to solve their problems, representation of women in the assembly is necessary, directly elected from the constituencies. Upcoming women can give better results in the construction of society with parliamentary politics due to working with more responsibility and zeal, their voice is relatively more powerful. Therefore, all political parties should be above all discrimination. Trust women to contest general seats, encourage them, give them tickets based on merit. Give women a chance to come forward, it will increase political prestige.
