It happens to the best of us: a few go-rounds with the credit card, a couple of missed payments; late utility bills medical bills and collections. Perhaps you lost your job or had unexpected automobile or medical expenses that put in you in a bind. Unfortunately, these can all add up to one thing: Bad credit that's hard to recover from. However, this doesn't mean you can't come out the other side winning! There are steps you can take to reclaim your good credit. Check out these tips on how to repair and rebuild your credit

Review Your Credit Report

First off, obtain and review your credit report.   Look over all of the information carefully. Even the experts make mistakes, so check your report over for errors. Review the report entirely. Are any late payments being reported? Is the amount owed correct? Are the account numbers correct?  Is your name and address correct?  All information being reported on your credit report must be accurate, true and correct.  The credit bureaus and creditors can and do make mistakes, so it is important to check over your report for errors carefully at least once per year.

Get Current on Your Payments

If you've been in the habit of missing payments, first of all, set up automatic payments every month for all your accounts. You will be alerted when a payment is due so you're never late again. Better yet, have the amount taken directly out of your checking account automatically each month for the utmost convenience. Late payments can lower your score, so take this easy step to avoid them in the future. Get squared with all your late bills and make sure they're up to date.  Make sure that you have paid any outstanding utility bills, gym memberships and any other accounts with a balance due.   Avoid accounts going to collection by paying all of your outstanding bills timely. Your credit score will improve slowly but surely once you start paying on time consistently.

Use Credit Cards Wisely

Credit cards can be very useful when used responsibly.  If you use a credit card responsibly it can provide you with a great financial value and can help to build and strengthen your credit rating.  Keep your balances low and if possible pay them off every month.  If you currently have outstanding balance, put the credit card balances away and start paying them down. Reducing your credit card debt will help improve your debt to credit ratio and will may help improve your score. Make a list of all your credit cards and what you owe, along with the interest rate. Pay off the highest interest rates first, and then work your way down.
