Venice has been one fog the most popular tourist destinations for long. The city that exists on water is sure to catch the attention and fantasy of many. After all we are not really accustomed to travelling on boats within a city. Venice is a beautiful place no doubt. It has got some of the most picturesque locations and is certainly a colourful city (though you have to know where to look). If you are a first time visitor to Venice, here are the few things that you should keep in mind.

Ø  Venice has got numerous rides and guides ready to take you on an exciting tour of the city. If you have travelled places like London or Paris, you probably think that taking a guide on a tour of the city is such a waste of money. Well, in Venice, unless you are planning on spending most of your time chalking out the route to the next place to visit you will like to take a guide. Imagine the confusing alleys of Rome, and then add to it the complexity that the canals meandering through the city presents, and you will have a proper idea about the difficulty of navigating through Venice. Even with the best map and GPS you will find yourself at a loss. Taking a guide will not only make the trip even more lively with all the stories of the various places you will be visiting, but will also make it possible to get from location A to B without losing your way in between.

Ø  Find some good places to eat in Venice well in advance. This might sound like an odd advice, but in a city where the number of tourists outnumbers the locals by a huge number, be sure that every eatery and other place is going to be meant for the tourists and driving out the local stores and restaurants. You will find quite a large number of restaurants with special breakfast menu or tourist menu, and likewise. If you truly wish to taste some authentic Venetian cuisines, check out the address of the local restaurants from your guide, or better still, follow some guide on the authentic Venetian restaurants and keep your list ready.

Ø  This is one of the most important things to remember for those visiting Venice for the first time – while having a cup of coffee or even an ice-cream, do not sit at the table. It is quite common in Italy to charge more for the coffee that one has while sitting rather than having it standing. The difference is probably the largest in case of Venice. Unless you are okay with paying three or four times the charge, take a corner at the counter and have your sip.

Ø  Commuting within Venice can be quite a bit tricky for first time visitors. To begin with, you can get on a ferry, but unless you are completely exhausted, take the road (well, yes, Venice do has roads). Also, you may get on a transport in Venice without ticket but get it right after getting on the transport and do not forget to get it cancelled as well.

Hotels in Venice are available in plenty. Carlton on the Grand Canal Venice will be one of the best places to stay.
