Relive the history in the fragrance of Lucknow
Planning to visit an old city, when holidaying, is a
brilliant idea. This is because these cities have too many stories to share.
India has a lot of old cities and Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh is one
of them. Those who are planning to spend
their vacation in this city need to know the places to visit here before
traveling there. This old city has a huge and impactful history and has some
magnificent old structures. But, apart from these constructions, there are some
lip smacking delicacies served here which one just cannot afford to miss. In fact, people from the entire world come
here to taste the kebabs, which are served here best in the entire India. This
city mainly flourished during the 18th century as the culture and
art centre of India under the rule of Awadhi Nawabs.
British Residency:
One of the major tourist’s sites in Lucknow and is the National Monument of
India. This monument became the centre point of battle at the time of Revolt of
1857 during the siege of Lucknow. It was the residence of British Resident
General that was almost taken over and stormed by the natives. The structure of
this monument and the walls are full of bullet graze and the ruins have been
preserved till date.
Bara Imambara:
This shrine was built by Nawab Asaf ud Daula in the year 1784. This is one of
the largest buildings of Lucknow. The word ‘Bara’ is an Urdu word which means
big and the word ‘Imambara’ means shrine complex. Inside this lie the Asfi
Mosque and the famous maze of India, Bhulbhulaiya. This maze is the only maze
in India. Inside lays the tomb of the creator.
Chota Imambara:
This shrine was built in the year 1838 by Nawab Muhammad Shah Ali. It has the
tomb of the Nawab and his mother which lies side by side. This shrine also has
an unfinished watch tower which is known as the Satkhanda. Satkhanda means a
construction which has seven floors or storey. But this is built till 4 storeys
and the rest remains unfinished.
Hazratganj: This
is the ultimate shopping destination of Lucknow. This is the traditional Indian
bazaar where the tourists can find famous and traditional jewelry, dress
materials, sarees and other handloom items. This is a must visit palace not
only because of the market but to get the actual essence of the city.
Rumi Darwaza:
This gate is also known as the Turkish gate and it marks the entrance of the
old city of Lucknow. This is a massive gateway built in the year 1784 and is
the finest example of Awadhi architecture.
