Reliance Jio, an LTE mobile network operator in India is the subsidiary of the Reliance industry. Jio provides wireless 4G LTE service communities and is the sole 100% VoLTE (voice over LTE) in the country.

On July 21, 2017, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of a brand new Jio feature phone during the Reliance Industries Ltd's (RIL) 40th annual general meeting (AGM) in Mumbai.

Jio services beta-launch happened on the 83rd birthday of late Dhirubhai Ambani, founder of Reliance Industries. Initially, the access to the services has been given only to the company's partners and workers. The service has been commercially launched on September 5, 2016.

Ahead of the launch of its services, Mukesh Ambani directed Jio entered into a sharing bargain with brother Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications.

Jio signed a pact with BSNL in September 2016 to get intra-circle roaming which would enable the users to utilize each other's 4G and 2G spectrum in national roaming mode.

The services were first beta-launched to Jio's spouses and employees on 27 December 2015 on the eve of birth anniversary of late Dhirubhai Ambani, founder of Reliance Industries, and afterward, services were commercially introduced on 5th September 2016.

In June 2015, Jio announced that it will begin its operations all over the country by the end of 2015. However, four months later in October 2015, the company's spokesmen sent out a media release stating that the launch has been postponed to the first quarter of this financial year 2016--2017.

Later in July, a PIL filed in the Supreme Court with an NGO called the Centre for Public Interest Litigation, through Prashant Bhushan, challenged the grant of a pan-India license to Jio from the Government of India. The PIL also alleged that Jio was permitted to provide voice telephony together with its 4G data service, by paying an additional charge of only ₹  ₹165.8 crore (US$26 million) which was arbitrary and ridiculous and contributed to some reduction of ₹2,284.2 crore (US$360 million) to the exchequer.

In its announcement, explained that the principles for 3G and BWA spectrum didn't restrict BWA winners from providing voice recorders. As a result, the PIL was revoked, as well as the accusations were dismissed.
