The entire concept of building and the way it is designed has undergone a sea change. Formerly engineers and architects only looked at the external appearance and structure of a building and the house or office owner arranged the furniture etc according to his convenience and idea. All this has changed however today with the age of the interior designer. It is this category of people who decide on the placement of the furniture, the colour and design of the curtains and even the colour of the walls. They are the ones who help in creating and designing the interior of a house in such a way that there is a harmonious blending of utility and beauty.

It was only in the mid nineteenth century that interior design began to take the shape of a major business proposition. With the industrial revolution came the founding of many business enterprises both large and small and thus came about the concept of commercial interior design. This entails the designing of the space of a commercial establishment in such a way that it provides not only a good working atmosphere but also creates a good impression on the customer who enters the office. In the early times this kind of designing was largely used only in hotels but now it has spread to include even the smallest entrepreneur as it is the office which creates the first positive good impression.

When people speak of interior design they often have a very limited view of it. Most people believe that it just alters the way the inside of house looks but house interior design is much more than that. A lack of it can result in even a house with a large area feel cramped as there is no proper utilization of space. It can also make even the smallest apartment seem spacious and welcoming. It can transform a space bounded by four walls into a home based on the concept that the owner has. The interior designer has the ability to create this dream space with the help of a large team comprising of engineers, architects, artists, furniture and upholstery experts along with painters and many others.

Some people look at the cost of hiring interior decorators as a waste of good money. What they often don’t realize is that when a space is not well conceived and a family or an office begins functioning within this space, it is only then that the problems it presents shows up and then an interior decorator has to be called in to resolve the issue. Using such a person during construction thus saves both money and effort.
