Recess – A Continuing Tradition or a Distant Memory

by Austin Stanfel Building a Foundation for the Future
At a certain point, recess seemed to be a key feature in the education system, but now, we see less and less of recess. Schools are cutting back on recess, and some of them have even cut out recess completely. Recess is meant to afford a break in learning hours.  And while schools may be seeking more ways to optimize the child's learning experience, eliminating recess may not be the right choice.

Advantages of Recess

Socialization: It is fair to say that socialization is a requirement of schools.  And when parents enroll their children, they expect them to socialize and interact with other children of their age groups.

A study has revealed that some undesirable elements of society developed such personalities as a result of isolation during their childhood.  Therefore socialization is essential in a child's life to ensure that they turn out to be productive members of society. Recess is one of the places where constant socialization occurs, as children, free from the confines of the classroom, can interact freely and play with one another.

Active learning: Active learning is a method of knowledge, where children learn by doing. An academic lesson can be integrated into playtime, and since the children are enjoying themselves, they carry out these tasks efficiently and without a fuss. The effects of active learning have proven to be long-lasting, so children can gain valuable knowledge, while in recess.

A break for the teacher: Teachers are very busy in the classrooms. They have their hands full dealing with more children than any one person should have to, and they do a good job. Recess afford them a break from the chaos of the classroom, giving the teacher a well-earned break from classroom activities. The teacher can rest during this period and be re-energized to carry on with their job when recess is over. When the teacher is well-rested, they can better educate the children and provide individual attention to the children that require it.

Physical development: The muscles are another part of the body that gets worked when children play. They run around, build structures, climbing equipment, and without their knowledge or conscious effort, they get stronger. Some of the equipment found on a piece of playground equipment is designed especially for this purpose. The equipment and activities help develop your child in the right way. With this physical development comes good health. So your child gets stronger, and healthier, all from recess.

Mental development: During recess, children spend the majority of the time available, playing. When children play, they gain certain benefits and among them is mental stimulation. The activities that the children undergo while playing and the equipment they use are designed to help stimulate their brain and help promote healthy psychological development. This way, your child gets smarter doing something they enjoy and is seemingly relaxing. You don't have to force your children into always studying to ensure they become more intelligent.
