You have had your share of fun last night, partying away with your friends. The next morning, reality sinks in when you experience a nasty hangover. Hangovers can last for a day. The best cure is to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water and sleep the effects away.

Alcohol Tolerance Correlated to Genes

Now you might be wondering while you are sitting here sipping lemon water and clutching your head, your roommate who was with you all night and had their share of drinks is perfectly fine, with no lingering effects of last night. You might be thinking life is simply not fair. This has nothing to do with stroke of luck, but rather you can blame it on the genes.

Studies conducted by scientists revealed that alcohol tolerance was strongly connected to the genes. If your parents were able to handle alcohol and cope with it the next day without any hangover, you too would experience the same way. So, the next time, you go out to party, you might want to ask your parents how well they cope with alcohol.

How Alcohol Gets Processed by the Body

What happens to our body when we get intoxicated? When you consume alcohol, it travels through your bloodstream from the stomach and small intestine.  Alcohol cannot be stored in the body, so it gets broken down into acetaldehyde, which is later converted to acetate through the liver. Acetaldehyde requires the help of three enzymes known as acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase and NAD+

NAD+ helps to boost the electrolyte levels by absorbing the sugar levels in the bloodstream. 90% of the alcohol is metabolized by the liver; the balance gets excreted through the body in the form of urine. Age, sex and size also play a significant role on how your body processes alcohol.

Factors Contributing to Hangover

Alcohol need not have to be the only culprit for those stubborn hangovers. There are other factors too that lend a helping hand. If you are suffering from a hangover, then you are likely to face the below symptoms: Low blood sugar

·         Fatigue and weakness

·         Nausea and vomiting

·         Disruptive sleep cycle

·         Mood swings such as depression, anxiety and irritability

·         Headaches and muscle pains

·         Dehydration

·         Rapid heartbeat

·         Gastrointestinal issues

·         Difficulty in concentration

The right hangover cure for those splitting headaches and nausea are tomato juice, coconut water, ginger and honey. When the hangovers start affecting the quality of your life then you need to seek medical help right away. In some cases, if not careful, alcohol poisoning can also take place, leaving a person unconscious.

Other factors that contribute to hangovers include:

·         Drug Abuse

·         Negative feelings or life events such as anger or traumatic past

·         Family history of alcohol abuse

Congeners too play a significant role in causing hangovers. These are chemical compounds that are produced during the fermentation process. These are responsible for taste, smell and color of the alcohol.

Conclusion

Too much of anything is harmful for the body. This is the reason you need to restrain yourself from going overboard, no matter how tempted you might feel.
