According to the Center for Biological Diversity, monarchs have lost 165 million acres of breeding habitat in the U.S. and are down more than 95% since the 1980s because of drought, climate changes, and pesticides that have killed off the milkweed plant, the only food for the caterpillars that eventually transform into monarch butterflies.

The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center in Pine Mountain, Georgia, provides a place where you can walk among butterflies to see them close. It's within a short driving distance from Atlanta, Montgomery, and Columbus.

Megel’s endeavor began as a live educational program to teach people how to raise and release monarch butterflies to help increase their population. The book, however, is more detailed with color photographs and is available as a physical resource to consult whenever necessary.

In her book, Megel explains what you should plant in order to start a butterfly garden and how you can locate and recognize monarch eggs. The author also details how to go from eggs to healthy butterflies, providing first aid advice and listing ways to avoid parasites and diseases.

The author’s goal is to teach you to raise and release healthy monarch butterflies. She currently hand raises and releases around 500 monarchs per season.

Her activity as a Master Gardener led to her interest in butterflies. When she learned about the importance of monarchs and their drop in numbers, she began to raise them at her home in Florida and later in North Carolina.

This book focuses on monarch butterflies, but the concepts apply to other types of butterflies as well.
