This position requires you to hold a bachelor’s degree at a minimum but most often it is a master’s degree that is preferred. The salary for the position is very rewarding. Average salary is more than $95,000 annually. The amount of money that you earn in the position can be higher or lower than this number. Many different factors affect the actual amount that you’ll earn, including the city/state in which you reside, your experience level and the company that you will be working for, among others. The job is in-demand, fast-paced, fun and very exciting, with several different individuals joining together to create perfect harmony.

Working as a PR Manager

A job as a public relations manager is one that offers a career with both challenges and triumphs but at the end of the day most would say it is both that make the job so rewarding. The challenges will come from understanding your clients and the industry in which they are trying to perform. Most challenges will arise from your team, as it will typically be made up of a variety of individuals. Here we will take a look at some of the people who will make up your team, their purpose and learn how they can be of benefit to an organization or company.

Public Relations Visionaries

First, you will have your visionaries. These individuals are responsible for the very first draft of success. This individual will sift through target market and demographic research to best understand just who your clients should be speaking to and how they should be saying it. It is very important that this step is taken. The challenges that this group will present is that they will at times get lost in statistics, which is easily done. As the manager, you need to be able to see the numbers and think on a broader scope. The management must always be able to keep the clients on top of mind and their vision at full focus. This will work to lead your visionaries down the right path in order to properly execute for your client. This is the ultimate goal of public relations management.

Facts and Numbers Oh My

The second group in your team will likely be the mathematicians, the ones who are good at numbers and all of the figuring and factoring that comes along with that. They will easily be able to see what your clients are presently spending and areas that can be cut to allocate more towards areas of growth through public relations and marketing. The mathematicians are ideal to showcasing to you clients just how they can better align their funds to see maximum growth. They will also work to show your visionaries the areas that the client is falling short, to which the visionaries can pine through endless statistics to better understand how to take-over the unknown. This is also important for the public relations manager to see the big picture. Just because your mathematicians are able to find areas of weakness, doesn’t mean they need to be exploited just yet. Save your visionaries time, and focus, by always looking at the bigger picture. Never lose sight of what your client’s end results need to be and tread lightly when it comes to areas that fall in the unknown category. Mathematicians can get lost in numbers, just as the visionaries can get lost in statistics. The big picture is what you must keep your staff focused on and ensure that is what they are moving towards.

The Creative Team

The third and final group that we will discuss here is the creative group of talent that you need. The creative are essential to public relations as they can take the ideas from the visionaries and the numeric data from the mathematicians and create the image or voice for the client. This step from the first two groups to the third is the biggest jump and at the times the most challenging for the management. Again, the big picture is what is important here and creative types are known for being, well, creative. They are brilliantly able to take a few simple words and create a masterpiece, but that masterpiece must be focused and on point which creative types are not always the best at achieving without direction. The management must be able to keep the creative zoomed in on the end result of the project and in doing so, keep them creating for the client and not themselves. Each creative manager will have his or her own esthetic, and a good manager can exploit that without hindering it. Ultimately achieving the perfect combination of vision, numbers and creative execution for the client to use and succeed. It is when the creative manager brings things together that great things happen in the world of public relations. Each and every company that is looking for success depends upon the creative genius of these individuals.

Final Thoughts

Each group is ideal, but each group requires a strong and focused manager to keep the entire process operational and functioning. Proper management allows each group to work in a fluid and combined manner. When the entire team is working together the end result is phenomenal and companies who are represented can be seen in a positive and worthwhile manner that gets them the winning edge over the competition. Good management is able to keep each group in the same place, but within their own realm of know how. By doing this, the outcome for the client will be profitable and your campaign will be successful.
