What is proteinuria?

Proteinuria is an unusual condition in which the kidneys release too much protein in the urine. Proteinuria is also termed albuminuria due to the presence of one type of protein, albumin, in the urine. It is often caused by dysfunctional kidneys. This condition is a sign of kidney disease or damage to the kidneys.

Protein is crucial to good health. They circulate within the blood, which is essential for various body processes. Usually, the kidneys block the passage of protein, keeping it in the blood for delivery to the body’s tissues and organs. However, in proteinuria, the protein in the blood passes through the kidneys and gets leaked into the urine.

High blood pressure is a common cause of proteinuria. Elevated blood pressure damages the kidneys, causing the protein to leak into the urine. Other than that, Proteinuria can also be caused by diabetes, kidney infection, and other renal conditions.

If this condition is left ignored or untreated, it can lead to severe health conditions and even kidney failure, end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
