Protecting Sea Turtles From Ocean Plastic Pollution: Preserve Marine Ecosystems

by PRC Agency PR

Sea turtles are cute little creatures that also happen to play a vital role in marine ecosystems. But, their existence is in jeopardy due in large part to our careless attitude toward their habitat. In its report, Ever Wonder Adventure outlines what will happen to marine ecosystems if we continue to pollute waters at current rates.

Sea Turtles: On The Verge Of Extinction

The Environmental Magazine estimates that global sea turtle populations have declined by as much as two-thirds since the turn of the 20th century. With just 6.5 million currently occupying waters, and industrialism showing no signs of slowing down or being reigned in, experts fear that sea turtles are on the verge of extinction.

“In the vast and intricate web of marine life, sea turtles emerge as true ecological champions. They play a critical role when it comes to maintaining the delicate balance of marine ecosystems,” explained a spokesperson for Ever Wonder Adventure. “But sadly, our actions have put their very existence under severe threat, so now we have to do something about it.”

Why We Need To Protect Them

According to Ever Wonder Adventure, the main reason why sea turtles need to be protected is the influence they have when it comes to preserving biodiversity. As a keystone species, sea turtles regulate the populations of other species, preventing their numbers from growing out of control.

One particular species that they help regulate is jellyfish, Ever Wonder Adventure explains. Known to reproduce in “blooms” of thousands at once, jellyfish pose a serious risk to the marine food chain, and can even wreak havoc on human resource management systems. As natural predators of jellyfish, sea turtles are an important ally as far as keeping their populations in check.

Another reason why sea turtles are important is because they return to nest on the same beaches where they were born. By doing so, they redistribute sand and support the growth of beach-dwelling organisms. Moreover, after sea turtles have hatched, they migrate, and this process helps redistribute nutrients through the water as well, the report adds.

What You Can Do

If you're interested in preserving sea turtle populations - which at this point, you should be - Ever Wonder Adventure has shared a few things you can do to contribute to the cause. Firstly, you can do simple things at home, like minimizing the amount of single-use plastic you use and ensuring that any plastic you do dispose of is recycled correctly. If you live near a beach, you could also commit to doing some volunteer clean-up and trash removal. On a bigger scale, they encourage you to sign petitions, lobby governments, and interest groups, and share your concerns with others around you.

“The preservation of sea turtles is essential for the well-being of our oceans and the intricate balance of marine ecology,” said the spokesperson. “If we don’t do something quickly about our reckless disposal of plastic waste into the sea, the consequences for marine life could be catastrophic.”
