Propane tanks are generally used outside in the open air. They are great for barbecue cooking. Outdoor catering units also depend on propane tanks. One of the key components in outdoor gas usage is a regulator. Propane tank regulators have a rubber O-ring seal or may have a metal to metal contact seal. Periodic inspection of the tank regulator for damage particularly to the connector will ensure that the regulator is in good condition.

Regulator basics
The regulator works to reduce the pressure of the LPG that is stored in a gas bottle or cylinder. The LPG is in liquid condition under storage. That is why it is termed as LPG (liquified petroleum gas) When the burner is switched on the liquid is released into a gas. The regulator has an OPSO (over pressure shut off valve) that will regulate the pressure and bring it to the desired lower pressure at which the gas ignites.

Keeping regulators in good condition
Care should be taken that condensation or ice should not form on the regulator. As the gas flows faster the regulator becomes cold to the touch. Other points to be considered are periodic checking of the hose assembly for leaks. Using soapy solution will give an instant feedback about gas leaks. When soap solution is applied on the hose assembly and the gas is allowed to flow if bubbles are noticed that condition is indicative of leaks. Another test is to smell the odor of gas. Care must be taken to see that the soap solution is ammonia free. Most regulators are made from brass. Ammonia reacts with brass and makes it brittle. Generally glass and surface cleaners contain ammonia.

Gas explosions basics
Sometimes the media reports of "exploding gas cylinders". Most gas fires result from poorly maintained hoses and regulators. It is very rare for a gas cylinder to explode. (source:ELGAS). The leaking gas ignites and causes fires. If the cylinder is kept in a poorly ventilated room the fire can cause an explosion. That is why most propane tanks are used outdoors where leaking gas can dissipate into the atmosphere.
