Product Information Management and MRO

by Jessica Banks Marketing Professional
The benefits of data management are obvious, and every organization strives to have a linear and retrieval friendly data system. Ensuring data integrity goes a long way in improving efficiency and cutting clutter. The benefits of master data management are also equally obvious, with many companies choosing either some sort of a software package or a consultant to help with their data management needs. This is an encouraging trend. Data management can also reduce costs in purchases by keeping track of how much material is used, how much goes wasted, etc. This is where materials master data comes into the picture.

Materials master data is simply data that focuses on information about spare parts, raw materials and pretty much anything that comes under the ambit of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software. This data is essential to organizations, and is usually centrally stored and used across the divisions.

This also helps with MRO (Maintenance Repair Operations) in industries. Repairs and maintenance takes a lot of money and time from any organization. Streamlining the data used for these processes will help reduce costs. Management of the MRO content reduces investment levels and improves part availability, which in turn reduces cost.

Integration of all materials data into one database reduces cost in maintaining databases, time spent in accessing, time spent in uploading data and also makes it easy to reduce data redundancy.

Product information management is another aspect that is important to organizations. A single database where you can find all the information about a given project or product will be highly useful as a research base, an information base to make new decisions and to provide clients with up to date information.

Some common aspects of both MRO data management and product information management are accounting and valuation, materials planning and control, purchasing (data provided for purchasing a particular material or product) and information for material requirements. Consumption based inventory control is another aspect that must be considered. These databases also have information on sales pricing and orders. On the whole, maintaining a healthy MRO database coupled with a product information database is a very healthy scenario for organizations due to the benefits outlined above.
