Prevention against food-borne disease with Kitchen Waste Bins

by John Steffen Consultant
Food is fundamental to human survival and its consumption is pervasive across the globe; however the amount of consumption and wastage differs from country to country based on the scale of economy, culture and living standards. As per the report of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on global food waste, 30-50% of the food which is produced is either not consumed or left wasted and this percentage amounts to 1.2 and 2 billion metric tonnes of food.

The food wastage differs from country to country; there are underdeveloped countries such as regions in the continents of Asia and Africa where people are food-ridden and living over the edge of starving. On the contrary, developed countries such as in the part of North America and Europe people are more health conscious and choose to not consume the food which is stale and not up to their health and living standards.

Food waste and diseases
In addition to the food wastage issue, the other concern is spread of diseases which are borne out of such waste that is most probable to take place in house kitchen and restaurants. Infectious diseases such as cold, flu and chronic diseases such as hepatitis, cholera are spread from food and water. The sources of these diseases are types of viruses and bacteria which spread the disease through hand-to-hand contact or from hand to food.

Food items that cause diseases…
Though any food item which is not disposed properly likely to spread contagious diseases, however, we can pick on specific food items that are likely to cause more harmful diseases, such as raw meat, fish, poultry, chicken, seafood, turkey, soft cheese, contaminated fruits and vegetables and more.

Prevention against food waste borne diseases
Management is the wise solution to any problem; similarly food borne diseases can be controlled with application of proper waste management. Kitchen waste bins are specifically designed to segregate organic and inorganic food waste, and the liquid/semi-liquid and solid waste.

Liquid waste is more likely to spread contagious diseases, dustbin manufacturers in India provide trash bins for kitchen, restaurants which help in managing food waste.

It helps in managing the waste and controls the spread of diseases. The organic waste can be dumped into different waste bin which can be segregated into it and can be used as composite in farms, garden or for other re-cycle purpose.
