Managing soil erosion during construction and mining work is difficult for all involved. The problem was identified a few years ago, when it became clear that soil was gradually being lost from areas of construction, or where ground moving was necessary. In recent years, the Australian government has moved to try to stop construction companies from disrupting the soil by issuing sediment control instructions and requirements on those businesses to prevent soil erosion through a number of methods. If your company is performing construction on areas where soil is at risk from erosion, then you need to understand how best to protect yourself with advice from erosion control services.

Managing soil erosion

There are several steps that you can take before you start moving soil in order to reduce the effects of your construction work. The first and most important step is to create a plan of action designed to help you prevent soil erosion throughout the construction project. You should identify risks for soil erosion and contamination, and also look at steps that you might take in order to prevent soil loss. When you have spotted areas of likely erosion, and identified soil erosion solutions that might be used to reduce or avoid soil loss, then you can start to clear away some of the soil, and begin making plans for erosion prevention.

Using materials to help you prevent soil loss

There are many steps that you can take to ensure that you don't lose too much soil. Firstly, you can dig channels to ensure that soil is not lost through water run-off into nearby rivers and streams. Secondly, you can fill soil roads to and from your site with gravel and use a sediment control product to stop soil from being lost through dust clouds and movements. You can then start to take more positive steps, including using water management systems to help control the amount of water that runs off of your construction site. This might involve using products that stop the water from flowing towards water courses, or that capture the soil before it is carried away. These sediment prevention steps ensure that you don't lose too much soil. You can also issue instructions to your teams to ensure that they take proper soil management steps to prevent dust rising from soil mounds, and being carried away by wind and rain.
