Preparation and Process of Floor Tile Installation

by Gabriel Parker Writer

Preparation required for Floor Tile Installation

Installing tile flooring includes proper preparation to carry out the process in a smooth way. The floor needs to be clean and strong enough to hold and support tile, grout, and all of the furniture when finished.

Cleaning the space -It's important to move the furniture and appliances out of the required installation area. Trimming door casings, and removing baseboards or moldings can also be needed to clear out the space properly.

Checking the subfloor - If there is a subfloor, it should be properly inspected for levelness or cracks. When the subfloor is checked and it is found suitable, then the substrate is put in.

Putting Substrate - The type of substrate that needs to be put depends on the size and type of the tile.

Planning required for Floor Tile Installation

The floor installation requires planning to carry out the process successfully.

Tools and measurements

The use of measuring tools, carpenter's square, and tile spacers is needed to consider the proper layout for the tile.

Measuring

Measuring the tiles is an important step to give them a symmetrical and aesthetic arrangement. Tiling begins from the measured center of the room and is applied in rows outward to the walls for a perfect fit.

Process of installing the floor tiles

Installation works in easy-to-manage sections, repeating the process of putting mortar and laying the tiles until the room gets completed. Stepping on the tiles until the mortar is set properly needs to be controlled.

  1. Adhesive - The adhesive applied between the tile and the substrate is appropriate for most tile installations. Mixing the mortar with the notches creates grooves to improve adhesion.
  2. Laying the tiles - The tile is set according to the measured plan, each tile is gently set on the mortar. Then it is outstretched and twisted to set it properly.
  3. Cutting of the tile - Once the tiling is completed, the edge pieces are cut and placed accordingly.
  4. Drying time is required - The drying time for the mortar depends on the type used.
  5. Grout - The professionals help to determine the correct colour and type of grout to use. The stones are sealed prior to grouting and it can begin after the excess thin-set is scraped off.
  6. Sealing - Sealants can make the grout more resistant to staining. it prevents the tiles from water damage. Sealing is a simple process and it can leave the sealant with the floor tiles.
