They are seen very rarely in the region, as they do not want to come out in the open. These are smaller compared to Savannah elephants and their tusks hung low. The head count is done through a unique method of dung count. Huge efforts are made to preserve this near extinct species.

Other than these, some animals found are African Buffalo, Cheetah, Giraffe, Hippopotamus and a host of other animals. Bili apes, large sized chimpanzees are commonly found in this region.  Congo wildlife is the most diverse with the largest number of animals located in this region.

A large number of population in this region depends on poaching, due to which the wild animals are at a point of extinction. So, wildlife organizations like WWF are striving continuously to conserve the animals and poaching is made illegal attracting heavy penalties if caught.
