Picking Out The Luggage For Different Travel Situations

by Lesley Sampson Freelance Writer

Making sure you choose the right bag to go away with is an important part of taking a trip abroad. It's not rocket science by any means but there are certain considerations you should make before you travel. Outlined below are a few points that it is worth taking into consideration.

Keep hold of your cash

It's pretty rare that people will want to spend more than they have to on travel, which is why so many are prepared to forgo the 'luxuries' associated with flights on some airlines by doing without extras such as meals and allotted seats in order to save a bit of cash. Making sure that you choose the right bag when you're flying with a budget airline is also critical if you want to reduce the cost of travelling to your destination. Flying with hand luggage alone always going to be the cheapest option, but it is also worth noting that some airlines now charge varying fees for checked luggage. For example, Ryanair passengers will pay less to carry a 15kg bag than they would to carry one weighing 20kg. If you do need to take more than just a cabin bag with you, but not as much as a 20kg bag, then you'll be able to keep hold of more of your cash.

Cabin bags

If you fly fairly regularly then the chances are you'll have seen someone get caught out by cabin baggage dimensions. If an item is too large then it simply won't be allowed on by some airlines and the owner will be forced to pay a hefty fee to check it into the hold. It's for this reason that it pays to ensure you have either purchased a cabin-specific bag from a reputable online luggage shop or have gone to the trouble of accurately measuring your bag. Different airlines have different rules, but in general you should be looking at a bag that fits into a space about 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.

Is that wheely a good idea?

Investing in a suitcase with wheels is a great idea if you are going to need to carry your belongings short distances, for example from the car to the check-in desk. When you are thinking of longer journeys then it might be time to consider using luggage that you're able to put on your back. Backpacks come in all shapes and sizes and don't make the mistake of thinking that they're only used by teenagers heading off to Australia on a gap year!

Is your luggage going on a journey?

If you are looking at options for excess baggage shipping and don't want to keep your belongings with you as you head off around the world, then make sure you invest in luggage that will be up to the job of keeping your possessions safe. A hard case is likely to be the best option as the shell will prevent other items from damaging your things. You won't have the option of expanding it and creating more space as you do with soft shell cases, but if it is being sent off as excess baggage then you'll only be packing it once before you reach your final destination.
