Physiotherapy Management and Prevention of Ankle Sprain

by Pankaj Sharma Digital Marketing Expert
We all have heard of the terms 'Ankle Sprain' and 'Physiotherapy' in our day-to-day life. But do we all know what these terms are all about and how they relate to each other? Physiotherapy treatment to prevent injury, restore mobility, and maintain physical rehabilitation of the body.

And Ankle Sprain is a common lower limb injury occurring due to damage to the bone or muscular structures and ligaments like the lateral and medial. So the most effective ankle sprain treatment is considered to be physiotherapy. The ankle sprain treatment is done by medical professionals, called physiotherapists, depending on the severity of the ankle sprain.

The physiotherapist designs a treatment program to enhance the healing process and advises returning to activities and sports by examining the severity of the ankle sprain.

And according to the examination, the treatment might involve ice packs, heat packs, and modalities like TENS, Ultrasound, Shockwave therapy, and ankle strengthening exercises. Ankle strengthening exercises can only be included after some amount reduces the pain.

Usually, there are three grades of an ankle sprain. These are :

  • Grade 1, i.e., Mild
  • Grade 2, i.e., Medium
  • Grade 3, i.e., Severe

Mild- Medium- Severe

Grade 1, i.e., Mild ankle sprain, can be cured by applying ice and compressing the swollen part. Grade 2, i.e., Medium ankle sprain, needs a little more care and can be cured using a bandage or splint. Grade 3. i.e., severe ankle sprain has the risk for permanent ankle instability.

As grade 3 or mild or lateral ankle sprain can cause severe instability in the ankle, the physiotherapist management includes grade 3 ankle sprain rehab protocol to get the recovery done. Foot intrinsic strengthening, closed chain progression bilateral progressing to unilateral, proprioception drills, bike, elliptical, and treadmill walking is part of grade 3 ankle sprain rehab protocol.

Often patients have the mindset that a lateral ankle sprain is not severe and players can return quickly and not take necessary health care. But they forget that it can cause subsequent pathologies such as osteoarthritis or chronic ankle instability.

Some ankle sprain rehab protocols for athletes and standardizations for Return To Sport have been used for situations such as post-LCA operation or hamstring injury. After the ankle sprain rehab protocol for athletes' time, participation in sport should start gradually to stress the muscles without causing further harm.

Improving the integrity of one's ankle movement

One can prevent ankle sprain by improving the integrity of one's ankle movement. Some of these are:

  • Lightly stretch for two to three minutes to warm up the muscles before any sports activity.
  • The amount of time spent on sports should be increased gradually to build muscle strength and improve mobility.
  • Build ankle strength with single-leg strengthening exercises like squats, lunges, dips, and rubber band strengthening workouts.
  • Use a brace or tape your ankle to prevent injury when performing the high-intensity activity.

Conclusion

As the role of an ankle is to adapt to the varying ground type, it must be well taken care of. So if you feel like you are struggling with an ankle sprain, you must visit the nearby dispensary and get the necessary treatment.
