Examples of COX -2 inhibitors are Celecoxib, Etoricoxib, etc. This group of medicines can be counted as NSAIDs. The difference is it is less injurious for the stomach other than heart, kidney and liver.

• Opioids

Codeine, Tramadol, Dihydrocodeine, Morphine and Oxycodone are some examples of Opioids. Among them, the first three are considered as weaker opioids and the last two are considered as stronger choice for relieving in severe pain. This group of drugs are used to treat moderate to severe pain relieve for a short-term basis. It can also be recommended for treating ongoing pain such as cancer and nerve pain. As opioids are considered as most powerful pain reliving medicines, it may leave some unpleasant side effects in 1/5th of the patients.

• Steroids

Steroids can be of two types. One category relieves in pain by reducing inflammation while the other category needs support of other pain relievers to work best. Prednisone, triamcinolone and dexamethasone are some examples of commonly used steroids.

• Antidepressants

Though tricyclic antidepressants are commonly used to lower depression but they can also be used as pain relievers if prescribed with low doses. Its use may also improve sleep pattern and offers relaxation. Amitriptyline and Nortriptyline are some examples of antidepressants.

• Gabapentinoids

Gabapentin and Pregabalin are Gabapentinoids which offers relive in pain especially who is suffering from nerve pain. But this group of pain relievers is not effective on everyone.
