Our Guide on How to Choose Fitting Blinds - Inside or Outside the Window Recess

by Marketing Expert Web Master

After making the decision to shift from curtains to blinds, your next challenge will be to decide whether the blinds should be fitted on the outside or inside your window recess. Fitting blinds can be a bit tricky since they work differently than curtains.

Ideally, when fitting blinds, you have to choose between “inside the recess” or “outside the recess.” For some, these words may mean nothing, but when it comes to choosing and fitting the ideal blinds, they are as important. There is no right or wrong way to do this, but certain methods may or may not work well with your specific blind style.

With that, let’s take a closer look at these two methods and learn which one will suit your needs.

What is a Window Recess?

A window recess, also known as a window reveal, is the distance between the wall your window is built into and the surface of a windowpane. It is also referred to as the depression space between the glass and inside the wall.

Exact measuring must also be taken into consideration when fitting your blinds. Recess size is the exact drop and width of the window recess. It is important to note that shallow recesses (smaller depth of 7.5cm or less) cannot be fitted with blinds, in which hanging the blinds outside will be more suitable.

Fitting Blinds outside the Recess

This method places the blinds outside of the window recess, which means that the entire window recess is covered. The height and width of the space must be measured precisely to fit the blinds properly, and no deductions must be made.

Advantages:

* When it comes to sizing, fitting blinds outside of the recess offers more flexibility. It means that the standard blinds you have do not need to be adjusted or cut down to meet the exact measurements.

* Inward opening windows can still be opened even with the blinds fully closed.

* Ventilation is better since the blinds are fitted a bit away from the window panes.

* More ideal for small windows as it allows available light to enter. This is because it allows you to retract blinds that are fitted outside of the window recess.

Disadvantages:

* Since this method covers the window sill, any objects or ornament placed there will be hidden when the blinds are closed.

* When closing or closed, blinds fitted outside of the window recess will easily catch on any objects close to the recess, such as sockets, furniture, or radiator.

Fitting Blinds inside the Recess

This method positions the blinds within the recess, right next to the window. Fitting blinds inside the recess may not always come in handy since a recess depth of 7.5 cm is required to ensure that enough space for the blind is available. To fit the blinds, the width and the height inside the recessed area in which the window fills must be measured.

Advantages:

* It creates a tidy and sharp finish. When fitted perfectly, it will look elegantly tailor-made, with any opening mechanisms placed out of the way.

* Perfect for vertical, roller, or Venetian blinds.

* When closed, windows are covered, but sills will still be visible. This is ideal if you have items placed on the window sill that you want to see/use even with the blinds shut.

Disadvantages:

* When drawn back or rolled up, the amount of light coming through the window can be restricted by the blinds.

* Small windows may not be perfect for this method.

* It may not be suitable if you want complete darkness in your room. If your chosen blind has a wavy or scalloped bottom, some light may still go in even if the blinds are completely closed.

The type of blinds you choose will impact the method of how you want your blinds to be fitted. Remember that each method has its pros and cons. With the tips mentioned above, you will be able to determine whether you want the fitting blinds to the inside or outside the window recess.
