OROP(ONE RAN ONE PENSION)

by Gaurav Gupta Digital Marketing

One Rank, OnePension reform could allow the General who retired in 1980 receive the same pension as a General retiring in 2015 serving exactly the same amount of years in the army. This is especially required in the military where soldiers retire far younger and could neither easily switch to other careers or find a living wage out of the pension. Nor find a living wage in the pension.

Forty years back, members of the armed forces were promised One Rank-One Pension (OROP). Simply put, OROP means uniform pension to all military personnel retiring at exactly the position with the same length of service, irrespective of the date of retirement. By means of an illustration, if two Colonels in the army have put in 25 years of service, one having retired in 1984 along with other in 2005, both will be entitled to the same pension and future increases. Rather than this, armed forces employees are currently entitled to 50 per cent of the last salary earned (with enhancements made by successive cover commissions).

There are powerful reasons for the OROP implementation, such as the early retirement of armed forces personnel, beginning as early as age 34; deficiency of post retirement work opportunities, lack of permanency of service. Armed forces personnel are possibly the only government servants that have no permanence of service, which typically is 60 years for other government servants.  Permanency of service, which typically is 60years for government servants.

My father retired last month from a government bank. His pension is 50. This pension is then increased annually to account for inflation. When my dad's-junior worker retires 10 years from now, he would likely draw a far higher pension than my dad because the wages at the conclusion of his service might be higher and the pension is 50% of that salary. [Salaries can grow a great deal faster than inflation in the authorities.] This is sometimes a bit unfair as my father and that individual would have served the exact same amount of years.

This issue can be far more critical in the armed forces in which position and prestige matter a good deal. A General who retired in 1980 after 30 years of service might be drawing far less pension in a Major who retired in 2015 after20 decades of service. The General functioned the country longer and in a higher rank. Should he receive a lower pension since he retired in 1980?

With this article, I want to give the reader a perspective on the legal aspects of the OROP and the reason why the requirement for your OROP is not merely legally justifiable and their claim entirely legitimate, but in fact, their requirement is the law of their land.

The defense pensioners long pending demand of OneRank One Pension (OROP) has been agreed by one and all but never approved and implemented. The party of present govt also agreed to implement this in their manifesto of 2004 parliament election but the same govt has out -rightly rejected this requirement. After seeing all ways are going down the drain and all political parties using this issue for their political ends and blackmailing emotionally, Ex- servicemen have begun INDEFINITE FAST AND DHARNA under the banner of INDIAN EX-SERVICEMEN MOVEMENT at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since16/12/2008.
