Open Source .Net from Microsoft all set for real apps
Microsoft is getting ready to deliver the much awaited feature-rich release of .Net Core 5 and ASP.Net 5 framework for operating system platforms such as Linux, Windows as well as OS X. Developers can now utilize the open source .Net core cross-platform framework from Microsoft in addition to ASP.Net web platform within the production environments that is set to be unveiled on upcoming Wednesday.
The relevance of .Net Core has been on an upward trend ever since it was introduced a year ago. The functionality of .Net Core ranges from the data center to touch based devices. Most of the features in .Net Core are powered by ASP.Net workloads along with CoreCLR runtime as well as CoreFX libraries etc. The addition of ‘go live’ license within the products are considered to be among the list of enhanced capabilities on offer which allows the customer to go ahead with deployment in production environments.
With the new abilities, customers would be able to receive real-world feedback regarding the functioning of the systems within the production environments. The biggest highlight is the compatibility of .Net Core with all the three major operating systems namely Linux, OS X and Windows etc. The introduction of some new APIs is also yet another key highlight with the most important ones being the APIs for localization as well as networking.
ASP.Net v5 on the other hand is responsible for transforming the hosting model and thereby making it consistent to work across Mac OS, Linux and Windows operating systems. Microsoft was able to reposition itself as a leader in server-side cloud stack for development of a broader ecosystem around .Net compared with its latest offering of .Net Core through open source in the previous year.
ASP.Net 5 RC is yet another open source .Net from Microsoft that features a lot of enhancements designed towards the run time as well as tools. It is designed to provide a perfect framework for web and cloud development. The Version 5 is comprised of a comprehensive package of ASP.Net MVC along with a Web API and Web Pages that is required for server-side code as well as dynamic access towards the HTML pages. SignalR library is meant for real-time web applications. Several other technologies up for the open source are on offer by Microsoft ever since the open sourcing of the .Net core and those technologies include CLR and NuGet package technology. Roslyn compiler project was made open source previously.
