Getting good grades is every student's goal. But every student cannot manage to put up a higher grade worthy assignment content. Every student is not seasoned writer or researcher. They may need external help to achieve their goals. Here is one of the resources that you should use while finishing your assignments. This article will teach you how to implement references in case of Harvard referencing system. Let's get started!!
In-text referencing:
In-text referencing covers all academic books, journal articles, newspaper articles and any material from the internet.
There are two kinds of in-text referencing,
- Direct quotations: (authors' exact words in text)
Example: ‘Sociological disclosure claims to be a knowledge of modern society, the mirror of modern society of the social' (Game, 1991: 20)
Necessary components for direct quotations (in-texting)
- Name of the author
- Date of the publication of source (the year)
- Page Number
Important note: You should use the author, year of publication and page number format when citing the sources of any diagrams or tables that you have reproduced from other people's work.
- Indirect quotations
This is the second type of in-texting that writers use when they have to reflect an idea and thought that has come from another writer and author. Here you mainly summarize their words into your words.
According to Game (1991), sociologists tend to fail into either the Action or the Structure camp and rarely combine the two.
If more than one person came with this same idea, you should put your references like this:
"Many writers have argued that research is inevitably a subjective exercise (Knights and Willmott, 1989; Game, 1991; Knights, 1995).
The usage of ‘ibid': The ‘ibid' is used in in-text citations where the citation is exactly the same as the one immediately preceding it. ‘ibid' is only used when the author, the date and the page number is exactly the same in consecutive two sources. Do not use ‘ibid' to refer to a reference on the previous page.
The usage of et al. : It plainly means the ‘the other'. It is used in in-texting where there are more than two authors for one source. For example, (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 1997) would become (Saunders et al., 1997). However, all authors should be listed in full in the bibliography.
Television programs, whether you are quoting directly and indirectly, you should cite the sources in this manner,:
For example: (Under the Sun, 1998)
So simply use the name of the series, or the name of the program itself and the year of transmission.
- The bibliography:
This list consists of sources that you have used in your writing. The list should be presented in alphabetical order of author's surnames.
Conditions:
If you have more than one work by same author, you should place them in chronological order.
Chia, R. (1994) ‘The concept of decision: a deconstructive analysis,' Journal of management studies 31(6): 781- 806.
Chia, R. (1996) Organizational analysis: A deconstructive Approach, Berlin: Walter de Gruyter.
If you happened to use works of same authors in the same year, then you need to use the following format.
Baudrillard, J. (1993) Symbolic Exchange and Death, London: Sage
Baudrillard, J. (1993) The Transparency of Evil: Essays on Extreme Phenomena, London: Verso.
These are basic rules you should follow while involving all references.
