To actually gain control over your camera, you'll have to know some basics of photography. In this article, we talk about one vital element of photography, i.e. time.

Have you seen one of those photographs where you might see the motion blur of a ballerina. This is accomplished by changing the shutter speed of your camera. A slow shutter speed will let you show the motion blur of your focus (e.g. fast-moving train) as well as a faster shutter speed works pretty the opposite, it restricts that motion.

When you want to gather movement in your photographs, you choose a slower shutter speed. Speed it up once you want to freeze motion.

To change the timing of your shutter speed, shift your camera to the shutter priority mode. When you shift to this mode, it means that your camera, once again, enters semi-automatic mode. You choose the time you want, your camera controls the size of the aperture so that it will make a good exposure based on your scene.

Exercise: Controlling Motion as well as Freezing Time

The best method to understand a new concept is by trying it out first-hand. Therefore, take your camera and practice what you have learned until now.

Tools required:

A camera, if possible a DSlr

Your focus, e.g. a piece of tissue you have

Fan, to create motion

Optional: A tripod or mini-tripod that comes without any charge with maximum purchases

Setup

Go to your settings, and change the AF point to the one in the center if you haven’t

Set your camera to shutter priority mode, then dial to a shutter speed of 1/50

Hold your tissue paper facing the fan

Concentrate on the tissue and take the photograph

Then, without shifting your camera around much, raise the speed to 1/300. Concentrate on approximately the similar spot and take the photograph
Save both your images onto your PC

Just see how on the 1st image, you captured the tissue flapping around is all a blur, whereas on the 2nd image, it's as if the tissue did not move.

If you've followed through, good job! You've just understood how to freeze time. Taking photographs with shutter priority is very exciting! Tell your friends to jump while you take a photograph or capture movements in other ways.

To sum up :

The slower the shutter speed, the extra time you let your subject show in your pictures
Use the shutter priority mode while you want to imply motion or when you want to freeze a moving object.
