One Of The Few Certainties Of Life Is Uncertainty

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

When you reflect on your life, there will no doubt have been times that were characterised by their uncertainty. Perhaps you were in the process of moving to another city, or changing career, or dealing with a major change in family circumstances.

Whatever it was you were going through, the likelihood is that you will have realised during those moments that life is full ofuncertainty, and that nothing can ever be taken for granted.

However, at other times, it can be easy to forget these truths you may even have thought you had everything ‘figured out’, and that you could expect your life to be reasonably stable and predictable for a long time to come.

That was, at least, until something – perhaps a devastating health diagnosis, a sudden death or another catastrophic event such as being sacked from your job – jolted you back out of your complacency. And so the cycle continues.

But How Can You Cope With All Those Uncertainties?

There’s no need to be utterly crippled by the uncertainty about the future that is inherent to being human. Indeed, there are some very useful strategies that you can adopt to help you to ride the winds of change and make the most of whatever life throws at you.

One such strategy is to prepare for any of a wide range of possibilities in your future life. Consider what the realistic ‘worst-case scenario’ could be, or the various choices that you could make and compile a list of what you could do if you remain in your present city, job or health situation, versus what you could do if things change.

It’s also a good idea to get serious about developing your coping and adapting skills. This is not and I repeat, not the same as “expecting the worst”. What it is instead about, is reassuring yourself that you can cope with whatever could conceivably happen.

Other effective strategies for dealing with the uncertainty and change that defines all of our lives include learning stress reduction techniques such as meditation, practising mindfulness and, of course, simply focusing on those things you can control, rather than the things you can’t.

All of these approaches can play a key role in making the future that little bit less scary. Another thing that can help is talking to someone who is outside the situation and can help you see things in a different light. Get in touch with me, Tamar Posner, about my Counselling Services In London together, we can figure out how you can navigate the worries about uncertainties and change that may presently be disturbing you.

In the meantime, I’ll leave you another one of my poems! This one, I would like to think, is certainly relevant to the subject I have just been talking about.
