Wildlife In Oman

We asked several local stars in Oman to share where they like to spend their long weekends or mini-breaks, and this is what they said:

Green holidays attract

My favorite destination in Oman is Salalah, but you have to spend three to seven days there. For a mini break, I would prefer Jabal Akhdar, as it is not far away, has a nice climate, and sometimes reminds me of my home (Nepal). We also have cold spots in Nepal. The greenery and different plantations also attract me to Jabal Akhdar. My favorite resort is Anantara where I can enjoy my privacy in a serene and meditative environment. — Sarmila Parajuli, Nepalese Ambassador to Oman

Wadi Shab

Off-road to Wadi Shab

I think one of the best places I've been in Oman, which is a bit different from everything else, is Wadi Shab. It's completely natural and a great place to explore, so I'd recommend everyone to go there this Eid.

However, if you have family and kids, the place you want to go is Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah. It has excellent facilities for family enjoyment. You have a beach where you can spend the day, you have swimming pools, and you have a lot of things that will make the children happy. I've been to other places like Sohar and Saham, and they're good, but they're not places you would go on vacation. To me, if you are looking to go off-road and be at one with nature, it should be Wadi Shab, but if you are going somewhere nice with kids, it would be Barr Al Jissah. Of course, I have yet to go to Salalah, but I want to go there in the future. It's on my list of places to go in Oman. —Chuck Martini, head coach, Muscat Soccer Academy

Beaches In Oman

Beckoning beaches

During Eid, the tradition is to go to your hometown and from there visit your family and friends, who also live in nearby wilayats. If it's a long holiday, as this Eid seems to be, then let's go to the beaches, which are always beautiful even in summer because they are cool due to their proximity to the sea. Eid is a time when many people eat good food, so we often go for a picnic by the sea. Another place we like to go to is Salalah because it's the peak season in Khareef and the weather is nice at this time of year. It's about 23 or 24 degrees, and there's incredible rain that you never find in other parts of Oman. The rest of the Middle East is so hot during this time of the year, and then there is Salalah, which is so different, which makes it a place where everyone loves to go for Eid. As for my children, they love water sports, so any place with water is fine for them, whether it's a hotel with a pool or the beach because they love the sea. —Ali Al Barwani, CEO, Oman Road Safety Association

Family time in Salalah

For me, it should be Salalah because there are many areas of great cultural and historical importance there. Two of our prophets (peace be upon him) are buried in Salalah, so it's a very important place for me. It's also a place that everyone in the family loves, as you'll never find anything like it anywhere else in Oman. You find many families there at this time of year as it is so hot and you want to get away from the heat. It is a vacation spot that many love, as there is something for everyone there. You can just grab an ATV and have a BBQ with your family and friends in amazing weather, so what more do you want? —Syed Jameel, manager of, the Oman national cricket team

For a few moments of relaxation

I like The Chedi Muscat because it's very relaxed. It has a nice, quiet atmosphere and is an incredibly well-kept place. What I like about The Chedi is the different varieties of food they have, and they have very nice facilities too. I also really like the pool and the beach, as they are great places to hang out. — Gerald Lami Senior Coach, Juventus Oman

Inoffensive Attire in Oman

Nature at its best

If you like nature and you are a sea lover like me, you should go to Ras Al Hadd, which is almost three hour's drive from Muscat. This is one of the best places in Oman where you can experience nature in its wildest form. Ras Al Hadd beach is stunning, and you can do beach activities like surfing, windsurfing, and kite surfing, along with turtle watching. The climate is pleasant most of the time and ideal for a good swim. Plus, you can buy fresh fish from the local fishermen, and if you like fishing, you can even join them in their little boats for an exciting fishing adventure. — Fahad Al Abri, Oman Global Vertical

Road Safety in Oman

Cold winds and the rains

For me, my favorite destination has to be Salalah because of the weather. It’s like nothing else you find during this time of the year because of the Khareef season, with the cold winds and the rains.

My children also love it because they are not used to seeing this that often, and when we get guests from Dubai or other parts of the GCC, they are shocked to see a place like Salalah simply because there is nothing else like it, and they wonder why they have never seen a place like this before, or even heard of it. I have been to Salalah three times in the past five years. —Hemant Mehta, Ex-cricketer Oman

Are public spaces in Oman safe

Glamping at Sifah

When I think of staycations, Salalah is one place I always look forward to visiting. And now that my friends live there, it has been an even easier trip to take. I took the children there for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and everything was spectacular for them. The funniest part was trying to convince them that we hadn’t left Oman. If I were to choose somewhere closer to home, I would say “glamping” at Sifah with the children and friends has always been a winner.
