Recently, Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey issued an order directing that male police personnel from the rank of constable to assistant sub-inspector will be given an eight-hour shift and 16 hours of rest.

This development came months after the same system was put in place for women police personnel of the same rank. It had shown positive changes in their work, following which a committee was set up to find out if the same can be implemented for the men as well.

According to the new order, Police Personnel of the rank of assistant sub-inspector and below, the subordinate ranks can opt for 12 hours shift and take the next day (24 hours) off. However, they will not weekly offs.

This option is essentially designed for policemen who live in Mumbai but they are staying more than 50km away from the place of posting.

Meanwhile, personnel over 55 years of age and those suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer will also have the option to select either eight-hour shifts or a 12-hour duty schedule followed by a 24-hour break.

These shifts will not be applicable on days when there are major festivals and important bandobasts in the city. They will be asked to work for 12 hours a day on 15 days every year – for public functions, religious and other festivals and when there is a law and order situation in their respective jurisdiction.

Moreover, policemen performing office duties at police stations will have to put in 10 hours every day, from 10 am to 8 pm.

Besides, policemen deployed in the motor transport department and on security duties will not be given this benefit of reduced work hours and will have to continue to work 12-hours a day.

The order also mentioned that the decision was taken to ensure that constables get enough time to care for their health and family’s well-being.

If reports are to be believed, Mumbai Police has been looking at reducing duty shifts for overworked police personnel for more than a decade.
