Notebooks as a software thin client: mobile solution for hospitals
In recent years, the thin client sector has made repeated attempts to establish mobile thin clients. Because of the low numbers produced, they were expensive and did not go down well with customers. IGEL is following a different approach which benefits clinics and hospitals in particular.
How do I use notebooks as a software thin client?
With the help of the IGEL Universal Desktop Converter 2 (UDC2) client standardization solution, IT managers at clinics and hospitals can convert notebooks with x86 hardware into a software thin client with IGEL Universal Desktop firmware. In the process, the notebook is equipped with the modern and secure IGEL Linux 5 thin client operating system.
How does a notebook become a software thin client?
Software clients can be created either on the individual notebook itself or via the network. The IGEL Universal Desktop Converter 2 (UDC2) solution offers four ways of doing this: using a bootable DVD from the manufacturer, a bootable USB stick created using the IGEL UDC2 or an FTP server, or an IGEL UDC2 token including a license SIM card. The fourth way is via the IGEL Deployment Appliance which allows software thin clients to be rolled out via the network with the help of a PXE server and web GUI.
Standardized remote management
The remote management of all IGEL thin clients and zero clients (including software thin clients created using the UDC2) is carried out via the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) solution which comes supplied with IGEL products. The standardized management of hardware and software thin clients plays a key role here. After all, the maximum cost savings can only be achieved with a high-performance management solution.
Notebook thin clients in practice
Notebooks which run as a software thin client under Linux have a battery level display, allow basic WLAN access and offer excellent compatibility with graphic chip sets and notebook graphics cards. Because the IGEL Linux thin client operating system is considerably leaner than Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 for example, the electricity consumption during operation is lower too.
Free choice of notebook hardware
Compared to dedicated notebook thin clients, the approach with IGEL software thin clients allows a free choice of low-cost notebook hardware – with a local keyboard layout, standardized remote management, straightforward operation and a high level of data security. Summary: a clever alternative.
