Northern Irish Firm Mallaghan Creates 210 New Aviation Vacancies

Even as the debate surrounding Brexit and its potential impact on the aerospace sector rumbles on, companies are continuing to launch new Aviation Talent Search campaigns. The latest example of this comes from County Tyrone manufacturing company Mallaghan, which is doubling its workforce as part of a multi-million-pound investment – meaning 210 new jobs are up for grabs.

As reported by the Belfast Telegraph and other sources, the family-owned firm is putting money into the upskilling of its staff, while also extending its Dungannon premises.

Economic development agency Invest Northern Ireland has injected £3m of funding in support of the company’s research and development and capital and skills investment.

What are the business’s plans?

Mallaghan Engineering manufactures aviation ground support equipment such as catering trucks, passenger stairs, cabin trucks and de-icing rigs. The firm is looking to develop an airport bus with its new research and development funding, and currently employs 206 people.

Chief executive Ronan Mallaghan commented: “Working with Invest NI has enabled us to accelerate our investment plans, ensuring we have the manufacturing capacity and capabilities to build on our share of the high lift market. We aim to further grow our market share of the global aviation industry and will be actively targeting opportunities in the US and China.”

Invest NI chief executive Alastair Hamilton described the announcement as “fantastic news for Mid Ulster and Northern Ireland’s manufacturing industry”, adding that the company expected to recruit the 210 additional staff over the coming five years. He said that once in place, these new employees would generate more than £5m in additional salaries each year for the Northern Irish economy.

Brexit no barrier to the company’s ambitions

Managing director at Mallaghan, Martin O’Hanlon, told the BBC that the firm exported 70% of its products outside the EU.

He continued: “We’ll deal with whatever Brexit throws at us. We’re used to exporting. Yes our supply chain is fully integrated into the EU and UK but we’ll just deal with it as it comes along. It’ll not stall us or stop our growth. We’re determined to see this through and deliver what we can.”
